Biography / About Me
I am a professional marketer, educator, journalist, broadcaster, and former driving instructor with over two decades of experience in public safety communication. Based in Torrevieja, Spain, my career is dedicated to "education through understanding"—an educational philosophy focused on the psychological, cognitive, and behavioural factors that influence human error in traffic systems, rather than relying strictly on reactive enforcement.
As a specialist advisor, my work primarily focuses on vulnerable road users, young people, and international residents who must navigate unfamiliar cross-border traffic systems. By blending real-world instruction with immersive, interactive multimedia, I design educational toolkits that demystify traffic laws and actively condition positive life-safety habits from early childhood through to adult mastery.
Organisation Overview / History: From N332 to Project Understanding
The journey began over a decade ago with the co-founding of the N332 Road Safety Project (n332.es). Developed in close collaboration with professional traffic law enforcement officers from the Guardia Civil, N332 was established to fill a critical public information gap for the massive, English-speaking international community navigating Spain's roads. By translating complex, shifting traffic legislation into clear, practical guidance, N332 evolved into a vital public service platform, widely utilised by expatriate drivers, regional media, and local authorities.
However, years of analyzing driver error and system vulnerabilities revealed a deeper societal challenge: standard road safety interventions are highly fragmented and heavily weighted towards adults who have already developed deep-seated, negative behavioral traits through decades of poor practice and myth.
To break this generational cycle of risk, I created Project Understanding (projectunderstanding.eu). This initiative expands the N332 adult safety model into a unified, lifelong educational ecosystem that intervenes at the earliest possible developmental stages. It features an unbroken continuum of age-appropriate frameworks:
- Level 1: Early Awareness (Ages 0–10 via traffordandfriends.com) utilizes immersive school theatre, sensory audio training, and character-driven narratives to seed instinctive hazard observation and visibility concepts in young children.
- Level 2: Growing Responsibility (Ages 10–20 via rileyvia.com) employs a peer-led "Trojan Horse" multimedia strategy—blending global music streaming, podcasts, and social media to engage adolescents on topics such as micromobility physics, reaction times, and substance impairment realities without triggering defensive barriers, as they are softened by the character-led balance of information..
- Level 3: Adult Mastery (projectunderstanding.eu to n332.es) delivers deep-dives into driver psychology, including information based on topics such as cognitive load management, and inattentional blindness, to give drivers more of an understanding of the "why" road traffic laws exist, not to fine and punish, but to protect.
Crucially, Project Understanding initially fills the institutional void within the international school system across the Mediterranean coast. Because municipal police safety initiatives are structurally and linguistically bound to public schools, international schools are often left entirely abandoned. Project Understanding directly closes this gap, ensuring that thousands of cross-border European children receive world-class, proactive safety education. Moreover, the content and the concepts are created in such a manner that they can be adopted in any language, and any geographic location.
