Road Safety in the Province of Treviso

What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?

The Province of Treviso has long been committed to spreading road safety culture and promoting good practises to prevent accidents. Particularly, since 1999, with the help of an external experts team, it has been organizing an annual series of road education lessons to high school students of the Province in order to teach youths correct behaviours to practice on the road and those to avoid.

Since 2022 Province of Treviso has been running the Road Safety Table which gathers Institutions, Local Authorities, Law Enforcement Agencies, Associations and numerous operators in the area and sets the goal to plan and execute projects focused on reducing road accidents, lowering social, financial, and health costs of possible traumas that follow an accident, as well as to raise awareness and inform citizens through educational lectures and targeted campaigns: https://www.tavolosicurezzastradaletv.it/

The Province of Treviso, through the Road Network Department, carries out construction sites to improve road infrastructures, signage, and to upgrade particularly dangerous junctions along provincial thoroughfare.

As part of the Road Accidents Observatory coordinated by the Prefecture, the Province of Treviso collects data and monitors accidents trends on the area, as well as the main causes and dynamics in which they occur.

Estimated impact & ways of measuring

The theoretical-practical lessons that the Province of Treviso has been conducting in primary and secondary schools of the area since 1999, together with structural interventions to secure the provincial road system, have demonstrated to be effective tools for preventing and reducing road accidents, especially among youths, if they are used continuously and extensively.
The efficiency of the actions is mainly measured through the Road Accidents Observatory, coordinated by the Prefacture, under which the Province collects data and monitors accidents trends on the provincial area, as well as the main causes and dynamics in which they occur.

Your knowledge

The Province of Treviso boasts long experience in the field of road safety. In fact, from 1999 to 2015, through the “Road Accidents Prevention and Safety Culture Diffusion” project, Administration, in collaboration with Authorities and territorial associations, carried out many activities in this field and, thanks to the synergy of interventions, recorded a 60% decrease in mortality (higher than the 50% established, at the time, by the European Union).

After a period where the phenomenon trend kept itself on “normal” levels, after the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of lethal road accidents has unfortunately increased exponentially and it doesn’t seem to decrease, involving not only vehicles but also pedestrians, bikers, and cyclists. From different points of view this is called “tragic anomaly” in the Province of Treviso.

To fight the problem, since 2021 Provincial Administration resumed its own initiatives on various levels:

  • education and awareness in high schools;

  • promotion of virtuous/righteous behaviour;

  • road accidents monitoring at a territorial level;

  • improvement of provincial road network.

The 4 areas of intervention can be brought back to a single project that integrates them.
