Road workers operating on high-speed motorways face some of the highest occupational risks in the transport sector. Maintenance activities, road work, inspections, vegetation management, incident management and temporary traffic management frequently require workers to perform tasks near road traffic, where excessive speed, driver distraction and unexpected maneuvers can have severe consequences.
The Vision Zero programme was initiated in 2023, following several serious accidents that highlighted the need to further strengthen the protection of workers and road users across Brisa’s motorway network. These events reinforced the importance of moving beyond traditional safety measures and adopting a more systematic Vision Zero approach to risk management.
As Portugal’s largest motorway operator, Brisa identified several key challenges: reducing worker exposure, improving work zone visibility, eliminating hazardous activities, increasing operational consistency and ensuring that safety remained the top priority in all maintenance and operational activities.
A particular challenge was that many routine activities required workers to spend significant periods of time in high-risk environments. Pedestrian road crossings, manual cone deployment, vegetation maintenance in central reservations and repeated interventions at the same location all increased exposure to risk.
To address these challenges, Brisa focused on eliminating or reducing exposure wherever possible, mechanizing high-risk activities, improving vehicle and worker signaling and visibility, fostering a strong safety culture supported by innovation, training and continuous improvement.

Road safety begins with how drivers are trained and assessed, and that foundation is broken. In Spain, only 50–60% of candidates pass the practical driving test, and just 27% pass on the first attempt, according to DGT and sector data. The reason is structural: evaluation still relies on manual, subjective and non-reproducible judgement by individual examiners and instructors. This produces inconsistent results between comparable assessments, no traceability or auditability of decisions, and severe bottlenecks, with waiting lists reaching six months in major cities. Crucially, the data generated during training is never exploited to improve learning or prevent risk.
Beyond the test itself, fatigue and distraction remain leading causes of collisions, responsible for between 10% and 25% of road accidents according to the European Commission. Yet professional fleets and training centres lack objective, real-time tools to detect risky behaviour and correct it at source.

Our mobility systems and public spaces are rarely designed with children and teenagers in mind. And it shows. Over the past decades, research shows that children’s independent mobility (CIM) has been increasingly constrained by car-oriented planning and socio-cultural norms that emphasise supervision and risk aversion (Karsten, 2005; Shaw et al., 2015; David et al., 2025).
Young people experience cycling, walking, public space and urban navigation differently and can therefore provide policymakers and mobility professionals with essential insights into what makes urban mobility safe, accessible, and enjoyable.
Building on these insights, the Child Standard Coalition (“Coalitie Kindnorm”) was established in Belgium. The coalition brings together 30 organisations from civil society, the research community, the youth sector, and the mobility sector, with the aim of advancing child-friendly streets and public spaces. A first milestone was the publication of a vision statement in April 2025, which is also available in English.
The coalition continues to operate across the domains of policy development, communication, and research, promoting the Child Standard among local, regional and national authorities to support its effective implementation. The initiative has gained recognition at multiple governance levels (local, regional, and international) and was awarded the Flemish Traffic Safety Award in March 2026.

By immersing drivers in realistic scenarios, RoadmasterVR accelerates adaptation to potential on-the-road challenges, ensuring a faster, safer, and more environmentally conscious integration process.

Data from five distinct focus groups proves the platform's real-world impact: drivers trained using RoadmasterVR experienced 18.4% fewer accidents over the same timespan compared to those who did not. Depending on fleet size, this reduction not only makes public roads significantly safer but also yields substantial corporate cost savings by drastically lowering insurance premiums and vehicle downtime.

Sialtronica aborda desafíos críticos de seguridad vial centrados en la protección de los usuarios vulnerables de la carretera, quienes representan el 22% de las víctimas de accidentes a nivel mundial. Un problema principal identificado es que el 15% de los accidentes fatales** ocurren en pasos de peatones señalizados, debido a que la señalización pasiva tradicional es difícil de ver al anochecer y por la noche. Este riesgo se agrava en vías urbanas de alta capacidad, donde los vehículos que provienen de autopistas a menudo no deceleran lo suficiente al entrar en entornos urbanos.

Además, la aparición de los "smombies" (peatones distraídos por dispositivos móviles) ha creado una brecha de seguridad, ya que estos usuarios ignoran con frecuencia la señalización vertical. Este desafío de comportamiento se suma a un 25% de indisciplina en cruces sin semáforos. El panorama actual también presenta conflictos con bicicletas y patinetes eléctricos, involucrados en el 40% de las colisiones con peatones en ciertas áreas urbanas.

Sialtrónica se enfoca específicamente en entornos de alto riesgo como zonas escolares y centros de mayores, donde la visibilidad reducida pone en peligro a los peatones. Asimismo, se abordan riesgos en infraestructuras como túneles y carreteras convencionales mal iluminadas, donde la falta de luz adecuada incrementa significativamente la probabilidad de siniestros.
