The Agència de Salut Pública de Barcelona (ASPB) is the public health provider responsable for public health in Barcelona. It is co-participated by the Barcelona Local Council and the Catalan regional Government.
ASPB monitors population health status and determinants, develops and implements public health policies and acts as health authority. The ASPB functions are to health information monitoring, health surveillance and control (epidemiological, food, environmental and urban pest), management of various programs and services for prevention and health promotion, and various services for drug addiction, as well as the laboratory. Road traffic injuries are considered as a key public health problem and road safety monitoring and evaluation is part of the tasks of public health. ASPB is guided by principles of transparency, excellence, and maximum quality. The ASPB aspires to excellence in its services, integrating good practice in public health through the promotion of evidence-based action and evaluation.
Moreover, through research and teaching it aspires to contribute, together with academic and research institutions, to the generation of new knowledge for the improvement of the health of the population. It has now a large experience in research, with more than 90 articles published yearly in indexed journals, and national and international research projects, with more than 20 active projects. ASPB has agreements with the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona to co-organize potsgraduate in Public Health with the Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, USA) to co-organize each year the Fall Institute of this University.
