The National Cycling Conference took place in Osijek from October 9-11, 2024, as a significant initiative by the Croatian Ministry of Sea, Traffic, and Infrastructure. Launched in 2022 as part of the EU's Danube Cycle Plans, the conference provided a platform for stakeholders to collaborate on enhancing cycling infrastructure and promoting cyclotourism. During the event, it was highlighted that cycling participation in Croatia stood at only 6%, which was significantly lower than in many European countries. The conference emphasized the need for investment in cycling facilities and the integration of cycling into public transport systems to encourage sustainable mobility and tourism growth.
The speakers at the National Cycling Conference included a diverse array of experts from various sectors, such as representatives from local governments and municipalities, members of environmental and cycling advocacy organisations, experts from national ministries, academics from universities etc. A mix of speakers contributed valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities surrounding cycling infrastructure and mobility in Croatia.
Sinan Alispahić, PhD, Assistant Secretary-General of the Croatian Automobile Club, participated by presenting the Responses to the Challenges of New Mobility Forms, which emphasized the importance of HAK’s manual titled “Become a Safe Cyclist and Electric Scooter Rider” aimed at children and youth for road safety. This underscores HAK's ongoing initiatives to improve public awareness and preventive measures in traffic safety. The manual is part of HAK's broader strategy to cultivate responsible future drivers.
