Good practices

The initiative “NEAR – New Education Approaches for Road Safety” is supported by 4 organisations from 4 countries to strengthen young people’s approaches to road safety in order to prevent deaths and injuries caused by road crashes. Our major objective is to promote safe mobility for young people, to improve their attitudes, habits and behaviour in traffic and to provide psychological support to survivors of traffic collisions and young people who have lost someone close in road crashes. Among young people we identify those who have experienced collisions and, together with other young people we develop preventive, supportive and educational models aimed at improving road safety and supporting the "invisible victims".
The project emphasises the approach of active citizenship to improve traffic safety. The results of the project will enable activities that will encourage young people to take appropriate action for safe mobility. We pay special attention to young people affected by the consequences of traffic crashes.

De belangrijkste uitdaging is dat we naast het zichtbaarheidsverhaal ook willen uitpakken met de andere facetten verbonden aan verkeersveiligheid. We kiezen elk jaar voor een nieuw concept. Een ander concept leert de leerlingen zowel de verkeersveiligheid als de zichtbaarheid vanuit een ander standpunt te bekijken. De nieuwe wedstrijd die we in het schooljaar 2024-2025 zullen aanbieden is het ontwikkelen van een verkeersspel. We denken eraan te gaan voor een participatietraject met de ouders. Afhankelijk van de woonplaats in de stad of buiten de stad ziet het mobiliteitsplan er helemaal anders uit. Jonge gezinnen kiezen voor de stad omdat ze hun mobiliteit vooral afstemmen op de fiets. Vele jonge gezinnen kiezen bewust voor het bannen van de auto en trekken daarom naar de stad. Terwijl gezinnen die zich buiten de stad vestigen meestal aangewezen zijn op de auto om zich te verplaatsen. Hoe zit het met het mobiliteitsgedrag van de kinderen van deze gezinnen? En spelen leeftijd en geslacht een rol? Situaties die het spel interessant kunnen maken.
Veilig en zichtbaar door het verkeer zowel overdag als in het donker is van levensgroot belang en een uitdaging op zich.Dat is trouwens de betekenis van de naam van onze vereniging XIU (sms-taal voor ik zie u). Deze boodschap dragen de leerlingen uit na het bedenken, het ontwerpen en uitvoeren van een opdracht. Een opdracht waar de leerlingen kennis moeten delen met elkaar. Ideeën worden afgetoetst; meningen verschillen en er wordt in overleg met elkaar voor de duidelijkste en meest doelbewuste keuze gezorgd. Een keuze die het meest invloed uitoefent op hun leeftijdsgenoten. De leerlingen krijgen tips van de verkeersverantwoordelijke om bewust te worden van het belang van gezien te zijn in het verkeer. Alternatieve oplossingen zoals het verbeteren van de infrastructuur of veiliger voertuigen behoren tot de mogelijkheden om in de opdracht te verwerken. De leerlingen kunnen deelnemen met een groep of een klas.

La moto está cada vez más presente en nuestras estadísticas de siniestralidad y debemos lograr tendencias sólidas que nos encaminen hacia el objetivo de cero víctimas. Los usuarios vulnerables y en concreto los motoristas, deben convertirse en uno de los principales objetivos de mejora de la seguridad vial a nivel global. Está demostrado que, para reducir el número de víctimas motoristas, necesitamos un enfoque específico que vaya más allá del enfoque tradicionalista que se ha aplicado en el desarrollo de las políticas de seguridad vial.
Con esta conferencia internacional hemos pretendido identificar esas buenas prácticas utilizando el enfoque del sistema seguro (vehículos más seguros, infraestructuras más seguras, usuarios más seguros y políticas integradoras), ya que para solucionar los retos que presenta la siniestralidad de la motocicleta es necesario aplicar un enfoque integral.
Asimismo, durante la Conferencia organizamos la exposición MotoTech donde se expusieron los últimos avances tecnológicos en materia de seguridad tanto en motocicletas como en equipamiento. El objetivo de la exposición era paliar el desconocimiento que hay entre los usuarios en relación a lo último en materia de seguridad para motocicletas y equipamiento para motoristas.

The safety and interaction of cyclists during infrastructure conservation and repair works are significantly impacted by changes made, potentially leading to new conflicts between cyclist traffic and vehicles.
The BIKEFLOW project's objective is to enhance cyclist safety in critical areas identified within modified sections during ongoing conservation efforts. By employing video analytics and Artificial Intelligence, we can examine the movements and potential interactions of cyclists and vehicles. This technology utilizes video analysis to forecast safety levels before incidents happen, enabling the identification of vehicles, routes, and speeds, with the capability to present data in real-time or upon request. In light of these analyses, permanent cameras have been installed at the junction of N-110 and N-502 to conduct surrogate safety assessments. This involves applying various configurations to the route to analyze the behavior of road users (both vehicles and cyclists) and to train an AI model that determines the most suitable layout configuration. The findings are then applied to adjust signage, lower speed limits, establish protected lanes at critical junctures, or modify paths as necessary.

Between 2018 and 2022 there where 93 fatalities and 894 serious injury collisions in Irish roads which involved motorcyclists. No specific road safety programme aimed at motorcyclists existed at that time. It was identified that the vast majority of these collisions occurred over the Summer months and almost 50% at weekends and many involved leisure riders or those retuning to motorcycling. Ireland has a large number of rural roads, ideal for leisure riding but this also increases risk through road topography and additional hazards which adversely impact motorcycle safety compared to other road users.
