We are on track. Together with you.

Initiative details

From the first of September 2022, MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktursa Fejlsztó Zrt took over the operation, maintenance and development of 1,237 km of existing Hungarian expressways.

When analyzing the accidents recorded by our traffic surveillance cameras on domestic expressways, we noticed that it is important to draw attention to traffic safety in our communication (keeping a following distance, observing the speed limit near work areas, protecting our colleagues, early education of children/young adults in safe traffic) and traffic -culture (littering, driving in an egoistic style that endangers others, early education of children/young adults on responsible driving).

Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

Our prominent partners include the Hungarian Police, the National Accident Prevention Committee and the Hungarian National Ambulance Service, with whom we participate in joint communication campaigns, traffic safety developments and educational/career orientation events within the framework of a cooperation agreement.

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

We have launched several projects.

The first series launched is "THE MIND STOPS". In the series, we analyze accidents week after week, with the aim of enabling drivers to learn from them and not make the mistakes that lead to accidents.

Our BE SAFE video series focuses on the most critical issues of safe motorway driving.
The expert of our regular series is driving instructor Zoltán Tóth.
The topics covered in the series to date have included:
following distance, keeping to the right, accidents,
acceleration and deceleration lanes, seat belt use, seat
adjustment, child seat use, poor visibility and road conditions.
Not only the safety of our employees but also the safety of road users is of paramount importance to our company, so in this series, we draw your attention to situations that can prevent many accidents. The continuation of the series with special editions is already in production this year.

In 2023, we started the "GET THE SHOW ON THE ROAD" video series with Hungarian comedians, which we will continue in 2024. Littering, wreck derby, carelessness, impatience, theft at rest areas..., everything that is transport culture.

At the beginning of 2024, the MKIF Stand was launched in MINIPOLIS (This is a mini-city where children tried out the world of adults in safe, controlled conditions). We have joined forces with the National Accident Prevention Committee and HUMDA Hungarian Mobility Development Agency Zrt. to promote unique child-centered educational experiences and road safety.
This exciting collaboration aims to teach children the basics of safe driving in a playful environment from a young age, helping to ensure that future generations will be responsible road users.

Safe roads are the basis for safe transport. The MKIF Stand is a fun and educational adventure for 3-12-year-olds, where children
can not only learn about the work of our Engineering Agencies,
road maintenance and closures but also become responsible and
aware young road users thanks to the road safety quiz.

It is important to point out that the gates of our engineering departments are always open to schools, so we hold career guidance/traffic safety lectures several times a year for elementary school and high school students.

ONBOARD CAMERAS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED IN OUR CARS
We have installed onboard cameras in our cars.
So we've fitted some of our road patrol and foreman vehicles and truck mounted attenuators (TMA) with driving recorders at the front and rear—to protect everyone.
Since 1 September 2022
• Our colleagues have been involved in 43 accidents
• 9 of our colleagues were hospitalized
• More than 40 of our vehicles were damaged or disabled

Because of the high number of injuries and property
damage, we decided to install cameras to protect our colleagues and vehicles.

We expected this to improve road safety and morals. We hope
the fact that we make recordings from our cars will bring
increased safety for our staff. This way we protect ours
colleagues' life and safety and the integrity of our vehicles.

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?

Experience shows that launched campaigns have an impact on road users. They take better care of our colleagues, fewer accidents occur on our network due to inattention. Since then, many more people use the highways in a normal driving style and more safely.

Evaluation

Please summarise how you have evaluated the initiative’s impact (e.g. social media reach, survey, feedback forms, statistics).

Our social media reach speaks for itself. We currently have 23,000 followers on Facebook. Since January 1, 2023, content shared on our site has generated more than 14.3 million hits, more than 17 million viewed minutes, and received more than 275,000 shares and reactions. More than 590,000 users visited our site. Looking at your comments and private messages, we can see positive comments that agree with the message of the series and encourage you to create more similar content.

What has been the effect of the activities?

As a newly started company, the most difficult thing was to reach people and introduce the company. We want to show people that we have a different approach to highway transport than our predecessors.

According to the statistics prepared by the Hungarian State, the number of accidents, especially the number of serious and fatal accidents, has decreased compared to previous years on the sections we operate.

- There was 1 more fatal case (year 2022: 24 cases, year 2023: 25 cases)
- 3 more people died in 2023 than a year earlier.

It can be seen that usually 1 person dies in 1 fatal accident, but in 2023 a total of 4 people died in 2 accidents on the road M86.
The number of accidents with serious injuries decreased by 30 (2022: 137, 2023: 107).
The number of accidents with minor injuries decreased by 27 (year 2022: 290, year 2023: 263).
The magnitude of the increases and decreases suggests that the number of accidents has stagnated in 2023 with lots of traffic diversions and increasing traffic.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

Our projects are interesting and enjoyable for all ages. We can educate everyone to safe, ethical and civilized traffic in a style appropriate to their age. After all, whether a child or a middle-aged person is driving, he may remember that he saw a video from us or heard one of our colleagues talk at the site, for example, about the following distance, and the memories of what happens if you don't keep the right distance are already coming.

It is worthwhile to produce personalized content for all age groups or to organize a program for the sake of future traffic safety.

No matter how many people do not find highway traffic interesting, it is still worth producing infotainment content about it.

How have you shared information about your project and its results?

The Hungarian press regularly reports on our projects, statements, social media posts, and events. We ourselves regularly share our results with our followers on social media platforms, whether it is about a new traffic safety development or another renovated or newly built highway section.
