The danger for children in traffic increases significantly in darkness or poor visibility. Children are often overlooked in such conditions because their small size and usually dark clothing make them difficult for drivers to see. Without adequate lighting or reflective materials, they are especially at risk, as they are noticed much later than adults. Additionally, children often react impulsively and unpredictably in traffic, which increases the risk of accidents.
It is particularly critical that children have difficulty judging distances and the speed of vehicles. This ability is further impaired in the dark. Drivers also have limited visibility in the dark and need more time to react to unexpected obstacles. Glare from street lighting, oncoming vehicles, or bad weather exacerbates the situation.
Another problem is that children often do not realize that they are harder to see in poor lighting conditions. They rely on drivers always seeing and stopping for them. This misjudgment can be dangerous. Therefore, it is important that children learn early on how to improve their visibility in traffic.

The thing that worked the best was that absolute majority of people who attended our trainings have realized the need to refresh their driving skills annually and keep returning and spreading the word about our program. The challenge that we encountered was that personal safety reflectors get often get lost and need to be distributed annually instead of being a one-off purchase. We also encountered myths among drivers that driving for many years reduces the risk of having accidents, which is not the case and we worked hard to inform them that no matter the experience, drivers should constantly update their skills and knowledge of the traffic rules.

The SWARCO Lighthouse Project Young Mobility Ambassadors Program was launched in Austria in January 2024 with the aim to become a long-term project with a positive impact on society, focusing on the most vulnerable group in traffic - young people aged 14 to 19. According to statistics, distraction and risk-taking are the main causes of accidents among this group. With this project, we want to motivate young people to actively think about how they can move intelligently and safely in our rapidly changing world of mobility. The project consists of 3 pillars: Road Safety Survey, SWARCO Award and Educational Materials.

This campaign is an awareness campaign aimed at raising awareness of the forces behind trucks and the challenges they pose in traffic. The purpose of the campaign is to improve the working environment on the road and increase traffic safety by focusing on awareness and behavior in traffic. The messages are delivered through 3 episodes, 1 cut of, and 1 hero film. Each episode addresses different situations, such as a reversing truck, right-hand turns, the power of the truck, behavior in traffic etc.

The campaign has been designed based primarily on the partners' wish that the business world contributes to traffic safety on Danish roads and cycle paths. Every year, for example, thousands of cyclists in Denmark are injured in traffic.

According to new figures from the researchers, the risk of being seriously injured or losing your life on a bicycle has increased since 2016, while the risk for virtually all other road users has decreased.

Cyclists and pedestrians encounter trucks in many different situations. This ranges from overtaking on the country road, to e.g. reversing and right-hand turns in urban areas.

DEKRA Italia, as a leading road safety company, faces several challenges and problems to raise awareness of the issue and reduce the number of accidents and deaths. One of the main ones is the increasing presence of driving distractions, such as cell phone use or lack of attention to the road due to fatigue or stress.
Our daily commitment is to raise awareness about the consequences of these bad habits and to promote responsible driving behavior.

In Italy in particular in the last year, there is a high number of road accidents especially among the younger generations: in this sense, our Mission is to raise awareness on proper road education among the youngest, but also aiming to include all age groups in order to change their cultural asset, values and habits in order to support the growth of a generation of future drivers inspired by safety and sustainability. By 'playing' from an early age with road safety and proactively exercising young people on the golden rules of safe driving, we are sure to contribute to future drivers being ready for the challenges on safety and sustainability of the cities of the future, between micro- and macro-mobility.
