29th National Competition “Stay Safe in Traffic”

The national competition “Stay Safe in Traffic” was held in Zadar, Croatia from the 23rd until the 25th of May. During the 29th consecutive competition the fifth- and sixth-grade students showed their knowledge of traffic regulations and rules, as well as their cycling skills.

The competition held at the “Zadarski otoci” Elementary School was organized by the Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) and the Education and Teacher Training Agency, additionally supported by the National Road Traffic Safety Plan. The host and co-organizer of the competition was the Zadar Automobile Club.

Teams from all counties, consisting of the two best girls and two boys, participated in the competition. Children previously demonstrated their knowledge and skills in road traffic at school and county competitions held throughout the Republic of Croatia. A total of 2601 children from 206 elementary schools and 210 teachers/mentors participated in all levels of the competition.

On the first day of the competition there was a computer-based test of knowledge of traffic regulations and rules, as well as a practical bicycle ride through the “Maze of Life”, which simulates real-life traffic situations. On the second day there was a cycling skills competition on the traffic polygon.

Three female and three male participants were awarded this year, four from which will participate in the European Traffic Education Contest.

In the team part of the competition, the winners are the representatives of the Varaždin County. Competitors from the Krapina-Zagorje County came in the second place and competitors from the Međimurje County came third.

The goal of the competition is to systematically increase the road traffic safety of children who, during the competition, acquire knowledge about traffic regulations and rules, as well as cycling skills in order to independently participate in road traffic. Thanks to this competition, as well as numerous other activities in the Republic of Croatia, the number of road fatalities and serious injuries among children has decreased.
