On 12 November 2008, representatives of eight parents' associations from secondary schools in Kortrijk met for the first time. The reason was a number of tragic accidents with young cyclists in Kortrijk, often caused by the lack of visibility of the cyclist. Confronted with the consequences and the sadness that these accidents caused in our schools, families, circle of friends etc., we decided to join our efforts in order to make our young cyclists more visible and safer.
Since that day, XIU has been working with 226 Flemish secondary schools and parents' associations to raise awareness and motivate teenagers to be more visible in traffic after dark on their bike. XIU does this by bringing fluorescent and retroreflective material to the attention of teenagers in a attractive and creative way in schools. In this way, XIU wants to increase the social support for wearing visible clothing and retroreflective material among teenagers on their bike.
