National Relay Event of the KTI

As National Relay, KTI Hungarian Institute of Transport Science and Logistics Nonprofit Kft.  organized the National Relay event on May 10, 2023, the purpose of which is to introduce and popularize the Charter in Hungary. The event created an opportunity for members to share their knowledge and experience; and introduced the Charter to the stakeholders involved in traffic safety and encouraged them to join. The National Relay Event was a professional conference where good national and foreign traffic safety practices were presented and discussed. The National Relay Event also joined the series of events related to the Hungarian Day of Transport Culture.

The event was opened by Berta Tamás, Deputy Director of Traffic Safety in KTI, who emphasized that on the occasion of the Day of Transport Culture, it is important to also talk about the positive side and values of transport.

After that, Kristian Schmidt, Director of Land Transport of the European Commission, presented the role and importance of the European Road Safety Charter in achieving the EU's road safety goals.

Sophie Vanhove, project manager at VIAS Institute, detailed the activities of the Charter and the possibilities for applying for the Excellence in Road Safety Award.

József Bíró, co-chairman of the KTE (Transport Science Association), held the opening lecture of the event, in which he presented the Transport Culture Day event series, which has been held annually since 2015 with varied programs, and in 2022 already 85 partner organizations and 161 activities were included. Its aim is to shape a safety-conscious and environmentally conscious transport culture and a culture of public transport on road, water, rail and air.

József Óberling, the executive director of ORFK-OBB (National Police Headquarters-National Accident Prevention Comittee), presented the national practice of accident prevention, highlighting the impact of individual traffic safety measures on the number of accidents, as well as the highly visible and effective traffic safety programs of ORFK-OBB, which include youth events, family programs, professional competitions and online communication campaigns.

After that, Ana Maria Ivan, Ambassador of the Children Car Safety Foundation in Romania, gave a presentation on the traffic safety campaign of Child Seats in Romania, which won the Excellence in Road Safety Award in 2021. It was an awareness raising campaign among parents about the importance of transporting children in child seats, and they were taught how to use child seats safely.

Then two Hungarian traffic safety programs were presented which were finalists for the Charter Excellence in Road Safety Awards in 2022. Although they unfortunately did not win the award, it is a great achievement to be among the top 4 out of the many applicants.

Gábor Dittel, the executive secretary of NiT Hungary, gave an interesting presentation about their campaign "Traffic safety for truck drivers - with a steady hand on 5 axles", which is a national, ascending system traffic safety competition series jointly organized by ORFK-National Accident Prevention Committee and the National Transportation Industry Board of Private Entrepreneurs (NiT Hungary). Its purpose is to prepare drivers at a high level for safe traffic, which is in the common interest of the employer and the employee.

László Lázár, the company's head of department presented HUMDA Zrt.'s road safety program, also a finalist, called "Road Safety - Safety comes first", which is a nationwide series of road safety programs for lower school students. Emphasizing the importance of road safety education for children, as today's children will be the road users of the future.

Anett Lovász spoke about the traffic safety programs of the Hungarian Red Cross, presenting the accident simulations with spectacular images, the purpose of which is to prepare people to deal with accidents and to convey the importance of safe traffic.

Last but not least, Viktória Ötvös, head of the Transport Safety Training Department of the KTI Transport Safety Research Center and the main organizer of the program, presented the KTI’s road safety education activities. He explained the method and results of KTI's road safety education monitoring, which effectively supports children's traffic safety education by assessing children's traffic knowledge level and shortcomings.

The event was very interesting, full of valuable presentations about good practices on the field of road safety. KTI received many inquiries about the charter and the possibility of applying for the awards.
