According to statistics, road accidents are the leading cause of death for young people, especially in the 18-24 age group. This is a good reason to raise awareness and to leverage the young population.
Many young people and young adults represent an interesting target for awareness campaigns. Not only can they help spreading awareness in society right now, but they are also highly exposed to road risks. Moreover, when properly addressed, younger people are open to learn and to change behaviour.
Motorways, Italian Police and City Authorities decided to reach out to young people by creating a project aimed at road safety culture.
The main goal is to widespread safety culture directly to students and young adults. It is also the opportunity to mobilize a huge number of national, regional and local stakeholders.
Impact and scale: The core of the initiative is made out of 40 events in 6 regions and 20 towns. Organizers expect to reach 10.000 to 20.000 people, ideally 15.000. It’s not just an easy tour of lectures in schools. Strategies for medium/long term engagement are put into practice. A concrete assessment of results is being made.

Young people are very sensitive to a wide range of environmental stimuli. For this reason, they also find it difficult to concentrate exclusively on the driving task. This is reflected, among other things, in increased distraction by smartphones and other secondary activities while driving.
Around a third of all accidents in Austria are caused by distraction. Distraction is also the number one cause of accidents among young road users aged 15 to 19.
For this reason, the Austrian Road Safety Board (KFV) developed a workshop with a focus on grades 9 to 13, which deals with distraction in road traffic in two teaching units. The workshop content focuses on the attitude and knowledge level of young drivers and passengers.
The workshop aims to raise awareness that distraction while driving can increase the accident risk. Furthermore, participants should gain appropriate prevention strategies.

A staggering 1 in 4 road deaths in Ireland in 2023 and 2024 involved young people aged between 16 and 25 years old (RSA, 2023 & 2024). This initiative works with young people to raise their awareness and their understanding of road safety, whilst providing these students with the opportunity to use their own voices to communicate to their peers through reimagining of road safety marketing campaigns.

This initiative works with young people at a crucial stage in their lives- as they become eligible to drive. In 2025, this initiative engaged over 1000 young people, who were early stage, new or learner drivers. This initiative acknowledges that this cohort of young people are most vulnerable on our roads and are not as receptive to the standard marketing around road safety to date.

In an attempt to reduce this disconnect, we are working with 18 to 25 year old students to use their own experience of road safety, and their marketing skills to relate best to their peers through highly curated, highly targeted marketing campaigns.

This mobile application includes basic safety advice for motorcyclists from how to ride in a group to how to brake correctly. Although users may believe they have a certain level of motorcycle experience, there are always risky situations where users are unsure of the best strategy. This mobile application is essential for the "retraining process" that users should go through after obtaining their licence.

The thing that worked the best was that absolute majority of people who attended our trainings have realized the need to refresh their driving skills annually and keep returning and spreading the word about our program. The challenge that we encountered was that personal safety reflectors get often get lost and need to be distributed annually instead of being a one-off purchase. We also encountered myths among drivers that driving for many years reduces the risk of having accidents, which is not the case and we worked hard to inform them that no matter the experience, drivers should constantly update their skills and knowledge of the traffic rules.

E-scooters - New TV led E-Scooter campaign

Our new TV led E-scooter campaign aims to raise awareness of the new e-scooter laws.

The campaign went live from Monday 20 May 2024 to coincide with the enactment of the new legislation in Ireland.

The campaign is set in an office environment where we see colleagues welcome the newbie.  The colleagues are dressed up as various characters such as a car, bus, truck, motorbike and bicycle and the newbie E-scooter. We see the characters interact with each other while highlighting six of the rules of the road that apply to E-scooter use.

The SWARCO Lighthouse Project Young Mobility Ambassadors Program was launched in Austria in January 2024 with the aim to become a long-term project with a positive impact on society, focusing on the most vulnerable group in traffic - young people aged 14 to 19. According to statistics, distraction and risk-taking are the main causes of accidents among this group. With this project, we want to motivate young people to actively think about how they can move intelligently and safely in our rapidly changing world of mobility. The project consists of 3 pillars: Road Safety Survey, SWARCO Award and Educational Materials.

Austria continues to be an absolute negative example when it comes to speeding offences. The effects of speeding and excessive speed on road safety can be clearly seen in the accident statistics: Inappropriate speed was the main cause of more than a quarter of all fatal accidents between 2017 and 2021. Particularly high speeding offences have an enormous impact on the risk of accidents and the severity of injuries. Speeding drivers are convinced that they have their car under control even at high speeds.
