MotoSurvival skills training

Initiative details

Low driving skills after completing driving school and driving exams. Weak evaluation on examine driving tests. Seasonal challenges, where after a winter period, when one starts to drive motorcycles again, the mind knows but body and muscular memory has forgotten vital survival skills. Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

Driving School association; Examine bureau; other motorcycle clubs; Driving school teachers directly. Road Administration Bureau in terms of motorcycle safety, examine, and legislation matters. Tallinn University Haapsalu College, Road Safety curriculum.

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

Over a two decades our MotoSurvival training team has performed trainings, where we teach and train both, the theoretical driving physics and practical driving skills to survive unexpected situations and to stay alive and in good health. We demonstrate possible scenarios which are caused by insufficient safety distance, wrong braking techniques, wrong driving skills. We also train governmental examinators; driving school teachers; we are actively involved with ministry of transportation and public health and driving school association.

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?

Our only challenge through two decades was Covid-pandemic period, when we only could perform outdoor trainings. We are very proud to be the leading motorcycle skills training and Motorcycle driving behavioural influencer. Fact, that we teach and train examinators and driving school teachers is a strong statement of our good job. Also that legislation officers consult with our training team is indicator, that we are successful in our never-ending job.

Evaluation

Please summarise how you have evaluated the initiative’s impact (e.g. social media reach, survey, feedback forms, statistics).

There are approx. 100 000 motorcycle driving license owners in Estonia. (Population is 1,4mil.people). 50% of motorcycle drivers know our MotoSurvival trainings activities. We are active in social media, national radio and TV, our trainers are also very active motorcyclists and well known in Motorcycle circles.

Many of our MotoSurvival trainers have a bachelors degree on Road Safety curriculum. Yes! there is such curriculum in one of the Estonian university: https://www.tlu.ee/en/haapsalu/studies/traffic-safety

What has been the effect of the activities?

Direct reach over two decades are over 3000 directly trained motorcycle drivers; Indirect, through our active involvement with examinators, driving schools, media, social media, etc., is 50% of Estonian motorcycle drivers, 50 000 people. Our training courses are always full with long waiting lists. Road administration and police have evaluated us as strong partners to minimize motorcycle road fatalities in Estonian roads, by offering traffic situation related trainings and by improving and influencing motorcycle behaviour in our roads.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

There are different motorcycle disciplines: racetrack; endurance; dirt track; supermoto; motocross disciplines. They all differ from everyday riding in active traffic driving. There are situations in everyday traffic, which never occur in sports discipline. Our MotoSurvival training is based on long heritage training, created by Norsk Motorcycle Union at the end of 80s and beginning of 90s. Our good friends in Finland, the Finnish motorcycle club MP69 (founded in 1969; https://mp69.fi/ ) trained our club members to be a MotoSurvival trainers back in 2003. Since then, we actively cooperate and train each-other and share best practices on improving long Scandinavian based-on-methods training. Quality of our training has been noticed nation wide, we are leading trainers and spokesman in a field of Motorcycle safety in Estonia.
We train other Motorcycle clubs and trainers to be a road traffic skills trainers. We see others as our partners, not as our competitors. Majority of driving schools train based on our methods. We also train examinators and traffic administration personnel. Awareness of Motorcycle road safety is rising every year.

How have you shared information about your project and its results?

Social media, media, TV, radio. Motorcycle related fairs, events, rallies. Our MotoSurvival trainings are well known over Estonian motorcycle scenes. Co-operation wit driving School association, etc..
