Driving under the influence of alcohol remains one of the most significant contributors to road crashes worldwide. Despite extensive awareness campaigns, legal sanctions and public education efforts, many people continue to make unsafe decisions when returning home after social occasions.
The challenge is not only a lack of awareness. Most drivers understand the risks associated with drink-driving. The real challenge is behavioural. At the moment of decision, individuals may face practical barriers such as cost, inconvenience or lack of immediate alternatives.
As a motor insurer, Hellas Direct recognised an opportunity to address this gap. Traditionally, insurance intervenes after an accident has occurred. However, preventing risky behaviour before an incident takes place can create greater value for individuals and society.
Safe Ride Home was developed to provide a simple, practical and accessible alternative to driving when a policyholder believes they are not in a condition to drive safely. By removing barriers to choosing a safer mode of transport, the initiative seeks to reduce risk before it materialises, contributing to safer roads and encouraging responsible behaviour among drivers.

According to The World Health Organization in the year of 2013, 186,300 pupils under eighteen die on the world’s roads almost every year and road accidents are amongst the top five causes of death for kids over five and the primary cause between the 15 – 17 year olds. Car passengers and pedestrians report roughly three quarters of road deaths amid the youngsters, while girls are twice less likely to die on the roads in comparison with the boys.
Road Safety - Learning outside the classroom
This is a school plan that will help 1st - 3rd grade pupils learn about road safety and understand their responsibilities as pedestrians and passengers. The goal is to develop attitudes and skills and the culture of road safety awareness leading to the desired behavior. Moreover, pupils can learn how to prevent accidents and avoid behaviors that lead to accidents.

Friendly Alcotest unit
Reaction Cyprus has set up a mobile alcotest unit in 2014 that has performed several actions since then. The last actions were 4 events during the second half of 2016 and the 1st quarter of 2017. The main idea of the action is to give the opportunity to citizens coming our of specific bars, clubs, restaurants etc to take a voluntary alcohol breath test in order for them to know the level of alcohol in their blood. The overall goal of the action is to raise awareness and inform the public of the dangers of combining alcohol and driving.
