The National Child Car Safety Caravan – A Milestone Event in Timisoara

Between May 23rd and 25th, the city of Timișoara will host one of the key stops of Romania’s National Child Car Safety Caravan, a large-scale educational initiative developed by the Child Car Safety Foundation, in partnership with the Traffic Police, SMURD Emergency Services, and Rotary International.

📍 Location: Child Car Safety Center – Timișoara, Str. Dr. Grigore T. Popa 81

This free event, open to the public by appointment, brings together families, educators, road safety professionals, and public authorities for three days of practical education and awareness-raising activities focused on reducing road injuries and fatalities among children and young people.

Key activities include:

  • Frontal collision simulation at 13 km/h using an unrestrained dummy – demonstrating the often underestimated risks of low-speed crashes.
  • Distorted-vision pedestrian route – where participants experience the effects of alcohol, cannabis, or fatigue on perception and reaction time.
  • VR road safety sessions for teenagers – providing a safe and realistic environment to understand the consequences of distracted or impaired driving.

This initiative is part of a long-term strategy to promote responsible driving behaviour, improve child passenger safety, and prepare the next generation of drivers through immersive, evidence-based education. It reflects a strong commitment to the principles of the European Road Safety Charter and to building safer roads for all.

Objectives

Objectives of the National Child Car Safety Caravan

The National Child Car Safety Caravan aims to address critical gaps in road safety awareness and promote evidence-based practices among families, children, and young drivers across Romania. The main objectives of the project are:

  1. To increase public awareness regarding the importance of proper child restraint systems and the correct installation and usage of car seats.
  2. To reduce preventable injuries and fatalities involving child passengers by promoting Extended Rear-Facing (ERF) travel and safe in-vehicle behaviour.
  3. To educate future drivers – particularly teenagers – through interactive tools such as VR simulations, raising awareness on the dangers of impaired or distracted driving.
  4. To promote responsible pedestrian behaviour, especially in urban environments, using simulations that demonstrate the impact of alcohol, drugs, and fatigue on perception and mobility.
  5. To foster a culture of road safety within families and local communities through engaging, hands-on learning experiences.
  6. To encourage multi-sector collaboration between NGOs, emergency services, police departments, and international partners for a stronger impact in road safety education.
  7. To align national efforts with the principles and vision of the European Road Safety Charter, contributing to the broader goal of reducing road traffic casualties across the EU.
