Motorcyclists' Safety project

Initiative details

We are addressing road safety for motorcyclists safety and innovative, pragmatic infrastructure solutions, that are working and can be applied on the roads, mainly for pro-active approach, and as well as active (passive safe).

Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

We worked with many external partners for different things, that at the end came together in a way of a guidelines.
University of Zagreb, Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences (pilot project monitoring and before/after study)
University of Ljubljana; Faculty for Mechanical Engineering (designing and evaluation of passive safe bollards)
Timplast, Ltd. (developing of passive safe bollards and gaining the Slovenian Technical Approval from ZAG - Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute)
DRI, Investment Management, Ltd. and University of Maribor, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture (providing expert support, evaluations and making of guidelines for motorcyclists' safety)
Ing. Gerald Höher from the Carinthian Regional Government (Amt der Kärntner Landesregierung)

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

Beginning with thinking outside the box we started to work and collaborate with various international and national road safety experts.
Beginning four pilot projects and their evaluation (before/after studies) confirming the thesis how to influence motorcyclists behaviour (slower driving speeds and better position on driving lane).

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?

Using Human Factors knowledge in road design we designed a self-explanatory (intuitive) road design, that in a way road would "speak" with the driver and warn him about possible danger ahead.
Main challenge was to convince and change the old concept of thinking and to prove that new solutions work. We needed to change the thinking approach and to start to implement proactive solutions, prior the accidents happed (pro-active approach instead of only reactive).

Evaluation

Please summarise how you have evaluated the initiative’s impact (e.g. social media reach, survey, feedback forms, statistics).

We made several evaluation that had proven the concept of influence of the road design on drivers (motorcyclists). We were also working together with motorcyclists and traffic engineers including Human Factors experts.

What has been the effect of the activities?

The effect at the end was wider acceptance of proposed solutions, making of guidelines that at the end were adopted and upgraded in to Technical Specifications for Motorcyclists Safety by the Ministry of Infrastructure. Now they are applicable for all public roads.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

It is good because the solutions work, they do slow down and warn the motorcyclists and with that ensure better position on the traffic lane.
The solutions are being included in FEMA; Safer Roads for Motorcyclists: https://www.femamotorcycling.eu/safer-roads-for-motorcycles/ and promoted in World Road Congress as well CEDR Workshop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L93Z4_fdfYg

Also colleagues from Croatia, are interested in the approach...
