Annual statistical report on road safety in the EU 2024

In 2022, road crashes in the Member States of the European Union claimed about 20,634 lives and left more than 1.13 million people injured. The new statistical report of the European Road Safety Observatory presents a wide range of statistical tables containing road safety data from the 27 EU Member States and the four EFTA countries. You can discover all these statistics here

New ERSO Report on Alcohol and Drugs

The European Road Safety Observatory (ERSO) of the European Commission provides reliable and comparable data on road crashes, in-depth analysis and information on road safety trends, practices and policies in the EU. One of the outputs of ERSO are the thematic reports. The purpose of these reports is to give road safety practitioners and the general public an overview of the most important research questions and results.

New report from the European Road Safety Observatory: focus on drinking and driving

Drivers who have been drinking are 15 times more likely to be involved in fatal crashes than sober drivers. This is among the statistics presented in the European Road Safety Observatory’s new thematic report on driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Around 25% of all road deaths in the EU are alcohol-related.

The crash risk associated with drugs depends on the type of drug. Of all illegal drugs, the risk is greatest - at least 5 times higher - if someone has taken amphetamines, multiple drugs, or alcohol combined  with drugs.

How to tackle issues young people are facing on the road?

Improving road safety in general will help to improve the safety of young drivers, but there is a need for additional measures specifically targeted at young drivers. Young people aged 15–24 are overrepresented in traffic accidents in Finland, which is also in accordance with the rest of Europe. Thus, we need to influence policy makers to apply the scientific findings on how to actively increase road safety among young drivers.
