SOSTRAFFIC BIKE

Initiative details

We continually see in the media news of accidents involving cyclists.
During recent years, the use of bicycles has increased significantly and according to forecasts, this growth will continue in the coming years since many European policies are aimed at promoting the use of this vehicle as an alternative means of transport.
This increase in bicycle use is accompanied by an increase in accidents, which has caused great concern in society since this group is the only one in which the number of deaths has increased since 2010.
For this reason, SOSTRAFFIC BIKE was born as a safety element for cyclists, helping them, on the one hand, to inform other drivers of their position on the road, both visually through flashes of light and telematically via connectivity to the DGT 3.0 platform, and on the other hand, provide the contact with the best possible information for the location of the injured person and reduce the response time in locating them, which will increase the survival rate.
.
On the other hand, the maps used by SOSTRAFFIC include roads and mountain trails, so in the event of a fall, the entire route taken by the cyclist will be recorded from the start and will allow for quick geolocation. This is important since in the event of a fall in the mountains, this information can be key to accessing the injured person quickly.

The SOSTRAFFIC BIKE project It is an innovative product connected to the DGT 3.0 cloud.
This device has a light to visually warn drivers of the cyclist's presence, a camera with a microphone to record everything that happens during the journey, an App linked to the device and a connection to the DGT 3.0 cloud.
When the cyclist starts the route, it sends a message to these contacts with a link where they can check his position and the route taken at a given moment. At the end of the route they receive an end of route message.
During the route, it sends the cyclist's position in real time to the DGT 3.0 cloud so that navigators, cars or any other device connected to this cloud can receive the information and alert the driver of the presence of a cyclist on the route, even if he is in a curve or area not visible to the driver.
In the event of a fall, a countdown starts which, if not deactivated, sends a message to the contacts indicating the location of the accident and the route taken by the cyclist from the beginning of the route to the fall on a 3D map (this is important especially in falls on mountain trails) and a video with sound of what happened just before, during and after the fall.
The video will allow us to identify the reason for the accident, even use it as evidence in case the vehicle flees and the images of the accident will be recorded on the SOSTRAFFIC server
If the cyclist enters an area without telephone coverage and the time that passes is greater than the preset in the App, the device automatically sends a notice with the route taken, time without coverage and possible location of the cyclist.

Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

SERNAUTO Spanish Association of Automotive Component Manufacturers is helping us to promote our idea among the different Spanish traffic organizations.

SPANISH GENERAL DIRECTION OF TRAFFIC (DGT) helps with the implementation of SOSTRAFFIC user cyclist data in its DGT 3.0 cloud.

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

Firstly, a study was carried out of the accidents that occurred on European roads.
After studying the sector, we proceeded to contact different Spanish organizations to see the viability of the project. All the presentations were a success and we received help from all of them.
We request the help of specialists in different technologies to guarantee success in the design.
We also contacted professional cyclists who have participated in professional tests as well as companies organizing bicycle marches.
Thanks to the data obtained during this period of activities, the development of the software and hardware of the project began.
The start of the project was in 2022 and during the first year the different pre-launch studies of the project were carried out, with 2023 being the year in which the manufacturing of all the molds and tools for the development of the product began.
During the year 2024, the application has been redesigned to adapt it to the changes of the two platforms (Ios & Android). In parallel, the road tests resumed, which will be completed throughout November of this year.

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?

The development of the SOSTRAFFIC BIKE has been long and very technical since there is no device with similar characteristics in terms of performance.
Technically it is being a very complicated project but at the same time very beautiful and interesting.
The biggest problems have come from the complexity of software development for automatic system communication and its viability with Android and iOS phones.
On the other hand, the initial work of collecting information has taken us more than 2 years of interviews with cyclists, family members, drivers, etc. It has been long but at the same time exciting because we have listened to everyone involved in a possible road accident. (or mountain).
We have also included emergency centers such as 112 to be able to analyze how to act in the case of an accident and what problems they usually encounter in this type of situation.

Evaluation

Please summarise how you have evaluated the initiative’s impact (e.g. social media reach, survey, feedback forms, statistics).

We have worked from the beginning with different organizations related to the world of cycling such as cycling teams, organizations to help injured cyclists, the Spanish cycling federation...
All of them related to the world of bicycles.
The product has also been presented in different Spanish cycling tests to monitor the movement of cyclists.
During the celebration of these events, surveys have been carried out among the participants about the problems of cyclists on our road and the opinion that the attendees had about the technical characteristics of our device.
90% of those attending these events answered their concern every time they went out on their bicycle and the high risk of suffering an accident.
We must not forget that there was also concern form family members who stay at home since not being able to follow the cyclist`route casuse them anxiety that only ends when the cyclists arrive ath their home.

What has been the effect of the activities?

SOSTRAFFIC BIKE is a new project that is launched on the market this year, so the real response of people has not yet been tested.
IF we have carried out demonstrations in different cycling events in Spain, we have also presented them and conducted interviews in different media that, together with the many surveys carried out, have allowed us to obtain an indicator of satisfaction from the respondents.
The general feeling is that 98% of those surveyed would use a device like SOSTRAFFIC BIKE as a safety element on their bicycles and the majority have also answered that incorporating a device like this on the bicycle generates greater security and they feel more protected. . .
The most valued aspect has been the communication with cars so that cyclists can be detected even if they are not in the driver's field of vision and as a second aspect they have considered it very interesting that a contact can receive a video showing what has happened. .
In third position in evaluation is the fact that the contact can see the route that the cyclist is taking in real time.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

The effect has been very positive since the majority of people who have tried it or seen it have considered that it is a very useful device and that it provides security to the cyclist and also to family members who can know at all times where this device circulates. .
Whenever we think about safety elements for cyclists we think about systems that alert the cyclist that a vehicle is approaching, but it has never been seen that a cyclist is the one who gives his position to a driver.
From all sectors contacted, traffic, cycling clubs, accident associations, emergencies, they consider this device as something innovative and very interesting for safety.
It is also very interesting for bicycle rental companies because with this device these companies have more data to be able to make decisions, such as creating maps of their bicycle routes with the black spots where more accidents can be concentrated, or from traffic to be able to See in real time the roads where the most cyclists circulate and at what time and day of the week.
With all the information that we can recover with the use of this device we can make our roads safer for everyone

How have you shared information about your project and its results?

The media where project information has been shared or is being shared are national newspapers, local and national radio stations, specialized cycling press, talks and presentations in cycling clubs, presentations to vehicle manufacturers, Spanish General Directorate of Traffic, Service 112 emergencies, social networks,…
An advertisement has been filed to be able to broadcast it on Television and social networks (we attach it to the project).
The video has sought to give a more artistic approach and to convey the needs of a cyclist regarding his safety, thinking about what he would like an ideal safety device to have for him.
Next week we will present the project at a mobility event organized by Sernauto and with more than 300 guests where there will be journalists from different communication meter chains.
