Institution of Highways & Transportation

What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?

The Institution of Highways & Transportation (IHT) in the United Kingdom focuses on the issue of road work safety to reduce the number of death and serious injuries caused to those whose daily working environment is live carriageways. Whilst to overall number of accidents involving roadworks on UK road is relatively low the risk of injury to this group of people is 50 times higher than any other worker in the construction industry.

There is sufficient evidence that raising awareness of issues surround road works and driving through road works would be beneficial to driver training.

The IHT will be working with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to develop specific training material to enhance existing driver training programmes.
The areas where IHT will contribute are:
The UK Driving Theory Test
The UK Driving Hazard perception Test
The official DSA guide to “DRIVING the essential skills”

The IHT Health &Safety panel would look into contributing in the following way:

IHT will review section eleven of DSA guide to DRIVING the essential skills which relates to motorway driving and rewrite to encompass driving through road works.

IHT will consider the possibility of drafting 12 questions for inclusion in the Theory Test.

IHT will design a case study for the Theory Test
