European Road Safety Charter member, the Roads of Mazovia Foundation, has launched an exciting and impactful fundraising initiative: the “The Warsaw-Paris Bike Rally”, taking place in the run up to the 2024 Summer Olympics. The project founder, Adam Sobiera, is aiming to cycle a total of 1,850km to raise funds for children in Mazovia, Poland, particularly those in social care.
The journey commenced on 10 July 2024, with the route from Warsaw to Paris spanning five countries—Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. Adam Sobiera is using international cycling routes to pass through major cities including Poznań, Berlin, Bremen, Amsterdam and now Brussels.
The Roads of Mazovia initiative aims to promote road safety for cyclists by raising awareness and working towards the Vision Zero goal of no road deaths by 2050. On Friday, 19 July at the 10th stage of his journey, Adam Sobiera met with European Commission, DG MOVE representatives Claire Depre, Head of Unit Road Safety and Torsten Klimke, Head of Unit Innovation and Research, outside DG MOVE offices to acknowledge their efforts in promoting cycling and road safety, in line with the European Declaration on Cycling. By engaging with Adam Sobiera, the European Commission highlights the importance of road safety and endorses the project’s role in encouraging children and adults to take up cycling.
Adam Sobiera plans to reach their final destination, the Olympic Stadium in Paris, on 26 July, coinciding with the launch of the 2024 Olympic Games.
As well as promoting cycling and road safety, the initiative has several specific objectives, including:
- Raising 100 PLN / 25 EUR for each kilometre travelled.
- Providing 100 bicycles to Polish children in orphanages and foster care.
- Encouraging bicycle tourism.
- Advocating for healthy lifestyles through active travel.
