Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

The program began in 2000 and started with Toyota Ireland who donated vehicles to set up, this was for 5 years. current partners are Allianz to insure vehicles and allow participants of the course to access a competitive insurance when starting out as a driver.
Bird, have partnered with us with our E scooter program , with supply of a number of E-Scooters. The courses are also accredited with CPD Group where all modules have been quality assessed and approved for training.

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

This course consists of a number of Theory sessions to reflect, road safety, Rules of road, legislation, Garda data, statistics. NCT statistics, Accident data, Specific to individual countries of Ireland and around Europe.

30,000 students take the programme each year.

Drivers Education modular program, 1. Introduction to Theory Test, 2. Considerations in Buying a Car/insurance/ road tax/ NCT, 3. Topics of road safety campaigns. ( seatbelts, mobile phones, speeding etc., to reflect gov priorities 4. What does the penalty point system look like 5. Accident data and statistics 6. Hazard perception. The theory sessions are followed by a practical day, which consists of three activities, Car Maintenance/NCT preparation. Driving experience with a qualified instructor on a set course. and finally simulated vision glasses to demonstrate the effects of driving under drugs or alcohol influences. All student record details in their log book

In addition to the Driving Education, in 2021 we added a E-Scooter program as this trend was taking off as new modem of eco friendly transport, nationally and the Irish Government decided to legislate the E scooter for general use , reactive to this impending

legislation we e we wrote a E-Scooter safety program to allow students to use and maintain this new mode of transport safety on Irish roads. This is a short theory course, which outlines safety requirements followed by practical application of using and operating

IE Scooters Safely.

The course delivery is flexible in terms of school timetabling and how much they want to include from full course as above to short course.

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?

The balance of the program works well as it is continually building the learners knowledge of road safety topics, on completion of the modules . Challenges can be Schools have a limited budget for extracurricular activities so initially getting schools on board with implementing the program, standardising materials, on web site was essential for a high-quality program, which was been taught by a number of instructions

in different schools across the country, we use relevant data from each county to reflect specific , topical issues.

Evaluation

Please summarise how you have evaluated the initiative’s impact (e.g. social media reach, survey, feedback forms, statistics).

Schools complete physical feedback forms following a course of which many are on our reviews section of website. https://www.irishsoe.com/reviews/ Annual meetings for staff review program and resources make improvements. This is a short course so success statistics are based on rebooking system each year which is 100% which new schools added in various locations in Ireland.
Student who are successful obtaining theory tests following the course is incorporated in RSA data as the governing body.

What has been the effect of the activities?

While, the successful completion of an approved driver education program does not alone make a teenager a more responsible experienced driver, it does help awareness Our programme has been designed to change the behaviour and attitudes of young teens towards road safety

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

The course is designed to provide the students with an understanding of the fundamentals of driving and to foster responsible attitudes and driving behaviours. Significant attention is given to risk awareness, driver alertness, occupant protection, positive interactions with other road users as well as the physical and psychological conditions that affect driver performance. Throughout the programme, there is a strong emphasis on extended supervised practice with a licensed parent or guardian to develop precision in the application of skills.
The course constantly evolves to government priorities and legislation. The practical day allows learners to drive a car with a qualified instructor, physically work on a vehicle highlighting NCT checks and maintenance for safe use, and finally student experience assimilated drugs and alcohol glasses to demonstrate the dangers of impairment.
