ZERO OBJECTIVE

Initiative details

With our innovative project Zero Objective we are addressing the figure of the designated driver among the youth. Although many of the students who did the activity are still in the process of getting their driver's license, they didn’t hear before about the designated driver. Thanks to ZERO OBJECTIVE PROJECT they are already very aware that they will put into practice what they learned in our designated driver workshop, generating in the attendees the commitment to take care of oneself and all the other drivers.
Zero Objective project is an awareness campaign based on the testimony of a victim of a road crash that was implemented by P(A)T during 2021 and 2022 with numerous groups of young pre-drivers (17 to 24 years old), and its power to form reliable drivers is still obvious.

Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

The most important partners have been the road victims that shared their experience of loss, the rapper that helped us make the rap possible, Carlos Garcia, and the Federation of Driving Schools of Catalonia (FAC), which represents 80% of Catalan driving schools.

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

P(A)T goes to driving schools to explain the consequences of drinking and driving - and with the participation of a testimony who shares their experience in relation to a serious road crash and the help of a workshop instructor - the driving schools students create the lyrics of a rap entitled “ZERO OBJECTIVE” from which a video is subsequently generated to share on social networks in such a way that the message reaches beyond the people who directly participate in the activity.
The lyrics of the song were generated spontaneously through the reflections of the participants. Each verse of the song was performed in a different driving school, so it evolved over the weeks, creating expectations for the students who previously participated to listen to the song.

The joint reflections that resurfaced due to the sharing of such an experience materialized a rap-style audiovisual content involving the participants with a leading role in the message. Therefore, Zero Objective has been a two-fold awareness project with both a short and a long-term respectively: (1) the awareness sessions with the youth and road victims where the importance of road safety was absorbed and (2) the rap-video Zero Objective with which the caution message is shared beyond the original participants.

Evaluation

What has been the effect of the activities?

The effect of Zero Objective can not be calculated precisely, but we can estimate, both, the number of participants involved in the reflection and creation of the rap and the approximate number of viewers.
The first part of the project (the workshop) was conducted 6 times with pre-driving schools and reached more than 100 students.
The video, for its part, was broadcasted by the, first in audience, public television in Spain, RTVE, and has also 2,5 K views only in Youtube. Knowing that the video has been shown to students in driving schools, we know that around 20.000 new drivers have watched and heard our caution message.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

Zero Objective brings closer road safety to youth. We know the difficulty of changing mobility patterns and bad driving habits because we have been working in road safety for more than 50 years, and we know the importance of changing the approach by which we try to do it depending on the age group. With young adults we tried an innovative and original idea of a road safety rap that they could take interest in, and, that way, make a difference.

How have you shared information about your project and its results?

The diffusion of the project was made through various means: first of all, our own web and social networks; secondly, the media, like RTVE; and finally the driving schools, where they show the video rap.
