Technical Day

Initiative details

The Technical Day held at Braslovče Primary School on February 23, 2024, in collaboration with the VOZIM Institute, was both practical and educational. The students were first introduced to the DRAJV app and analyzed traffic safety in the municipality. During the event, they created posters and presented proposals to improve safety, which were also supported by Mayor Tomaž Žohar. The students participated in activities at seven stations, including an e-scooter simulator and workshops led by representatives from the Police, the Braslovče Fire Department, and the Žalec Health Center. The VOZIM Institute ambassador, Janez Hudej, shared his personal story about a traffic accident, which gave the students a deeper insight into the seriousness of road safety. The event emphasized the importance of involving young people in shaping road safety solutions.

Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

Various external partners were involved in the event, each playing a key role in its implementation and in educating students about traffic safety:

• VOZIM Institute – The main organizer, leading the introduction of the DRAJV app, assisting in analyzing traffic data, and raising awareness among students through the personal stories of the ambassadors.

• Braslovče Municipality – Mayor Tomaž Žohar listened to students’ proposals and supported the involvement of youth in shaping traffic solutions.

• Žalec Police Station – They presented traffic regulations, conducted an interactive workshop on safety, and provided a tour of police vehicles.

• Braslovče Fire Department – They presented the role of firefighters in traffic accidents, rescue procedures, and offered a tour of fire trucks.

• Žalec Health Center – They conducted a first aid workshop where students practiced CPR and treating injuries.

• Triglav Insurance – Developed the DRAJV app, which students used to analyze traffic data

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

• Introduction of the DRAJV app (before the technical day): Seventh-grade students were introduced to the DRAJV app, which analyzes traffic indicators (speeding, phone use, accident locations) and developed proposals to improve safety.

• Technical Day – Analysis and Proposal Development (February 23, 2024): Students created posters and analyzed traffic issues in the municipality. They presented their proposals to Mayor Tomaž Žohar, who promised support for their implementation (e.g., pedestrian safety, improving intersections and lighting, limiting parking on sidewalks).

• Experiential Workshops: Students participated in eight stations, where they learned about traffic safety through activities such as an e-scooter simulator, crash simulations, mobile phone distractions, first aid, police and firefighter work, a creative station, and a tour of an emergency vehicle.

• Personal Story of Janez Hudej: VOZIM Institute Ambassador shared his experience of a traffic accident that caused his paraplegia and highlighted the consequences of irresponsible behavior on the road.

• Submission of Proposals to the Municipality: The students prepared specific proposals to improve traffic safety, which they will submit to the municipality in collaboration with the VOZIM Institute.

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?

What worked well?

• Strong student involvement: Students actively participated in analyzing data from the DRAJV app and developing solutions to improve safety in the municipality, which they presented to the mayor.

•Successful collaboration with the VOZIM Institute and stakeholders: Collaboration with the VOZIM Institute, the police, the Braslovče Fire Department, and the Žalec Health Center allowed for a comprehensive approach to learning about traffic safety.

• Experiential learning: Students gained practical experience through simulations, exercises, and vehicle tours, which gave them a realistic insight into traffic hazards.

• The strong impact of Janez Hudej's personal story: The personal story shared by the VOZIM Institute ambassador about the consequences of a traffic accident reinforced students’ sense of responsibility on the road.

• Connecting theory with real-life challenges: Students analyzed traffic conditions in the municipality using the DRAJV app and developed proposals supported by the mayor, which opens the possibility for actual improvements in traffic safety.

With the help of the DRAJV app, students gathered specific data about traffic conditions in their municipality and developed proposals that they presented to local officials. Their proposals were supported by the mayor, which means their voices were heard and there is potential for tangible improvements in traffic safety.

Evaluation

Please summarise how you have evaluated the initiative’s impact (e.g. social media reach, survey, feedback forms, statistics).

The following methods were used to evaluate the impact of the initiative:

• Participant feedback – Surveys of students and teachers after the event helped assess their response to the activities and gauge how well they understood the importance of traffic safety.

• Social media reach – Promotion on social media allowed for wider reach and increased awareness about traffic safety.

• Participation statistics – Analyzing the number of participants helped track engagement and the event's impact.

• Student proposals – Students submitted specific suggestions for improving safety, which were addressed by local authorities.

• Media coverage – The event was covered in local media, which increased awareness in the wider community.
These methods enabled the assessment of the initiative’s success and its impact on the local community.

What has been the effect of the activities?

The activities have had a significant impact on raising awareness among students, encouraging active participation, and influencing the local community.
Students gained a deeper understanding of traffic safety, especially regarding the risks of speeding, using mobile phones while driving, and the vulnerability of pedestrians. By using the DRAJV app, they analyzed the traffic conditions in their municipality and identified hazardous areas.
A particularly strong impression was made by the personal story of the VOZIM Institute ambassador, which inspired students to act responsibly in traffic.
A key outcome of the event was the active involvement of students in proposing improvements for traffic safety. They presented their proposals to the mayor, who expressed support for their initiatives. Key proposals included addressing dangerous intersections, improving street and bike path lighting, and implementing measures for increased pedestrian safety.
With this technical day, we demonstrated that young people can contribute to creating a safer traffic environment, and their voices were also heard by local decision-makers.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

The initiative of the Technical Day on Road Safety at Braslovče Primary School is an excellent example of how education, data analysis, and active youth involvement can contribute to real improvements in road safety.
It combines theoretical knowledge with practical experiences, allowing students to better understand traffic risks. By using the DRAJV app, they analyzed real traffic data, identified hazardous areas, and created concrete proposals for improving safety, which they presented to the mayor.
A strong emphasis was placed on experiential learning, where students directly experienced key aspects of safe behavior in traffic through simulations, practical exercises, and collaboration with experts. The personal story of the VOZIM Institute ambassador left a particular impression, encouraging students to be more responsible in traffic.
This initiative demonstrates that, when given the opportunity and the right tools, young people can not only gain valuable knowledge but also actively contribute to improving road safety in their community.
