The Serres Directorate of Primary Education

What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?

The Serres Directorate of Primary Education commits to the European Road Safety Charter for the next three years with actions based on the following two objectives.

The training of an approximate of 1500 pupils at schools and the Road Safety Park on good traffic behaviour. Our Traffic Education Programme operates on a local network of 50-80 schools.
The training of about 200 teachers nationwide in a national thematic network on traffic education. These teachers will then work to leverage approximately 4000 students on issues of traffic education.

The actions to be taken to achieve the above two objectives are:

1. The organization of events related to arts and crafts with a focus on road safety. Such events include theatrical plays that will be presented to school children with a central theme on road safety. These plays will be initially presented to 70 schools and eventually be rolled to out to up to 200 schools in the country. The events will also include art competitions, games and the organization of discussion around road safety topics such as cycling, being a passenger in a vehicle and pedestrians.

2. Research on children behaviour and learning habits. The research will focus on finding out what are the external factors that influence the behaviour of a child on the road such for example the road safety behaviour of the parent.

3. The results of the research mentioned will be then used in combination with road safety education material (optical, visual and a six edition educational pack) at school by teachers.

4. The organization of a road safety education meeting, at which teachers and other bodies involved in education, will be invited from all over Greece. Our aim in this meeting is to initiate a knowledge transfer from us to the teacher which they in their turn will transmit it to the pupils.

Our actions will be organized and carried out with the collaboration of the Panos Mylonas road safety institute and our scientific partner is the department of rural surveys of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
