What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?
We will elaborate a "map" on possible physical and mental driver conditions (stress, sight, neurology, motor coordination and reactions, sleep apnoea and other sleeping related diseases). The phases of this action will be the following:
Individual questionnaire for personal health and already identified symptoms among each of our drivers.
Laboratory tests conducted by Mehiläinen Occupational Health and the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.
Evaluation of workloads and tests to assess drivers’ physical and mental conditions.
Extensive sight evaluations and tests to assess, in particular, how well drivers perceive the environment in changing conditions.
Overall data analysis and results. Data will be provided for the companies, and will also be made available for further research.
Feedback for drivers and specific instructions for addressing the identified risk factors.
Verification of drivers’ working ability.
Follow-up of drivers’ health.
The map of drivers’ physical and mental conditions will be used to find solutions for safety and making our drivers aware.
We will offer our employees road safety training; the first training sessions are to be scheduled after an analysis of the existing driving and traffic behavioural patterns, which will be analysed through simulated driving in various weather conditions, load set-ups, and various potential risk situations.
In conjunction with the simulator practice, each driver will participate in a small group session (5-10 participants for three to four hours).
The project also aims to prepare the company for forthcoming European legislation and regulations for professional driver training.
New software installed onboard will enable drivers to be warned speedily about extreme weather, road and traffic conditions, as well as other road-related issues.
All trucks (approximately 75 in domestic traffic) will automatically receive the related warning/information on their screens.
During winter, the system will also incorporate general road weather data and alerts provided by a government agency. In addition to getting this important data to drivers, the very existence and operation of the system aims to emphasise the constant need to be alert to road safety and the important role played by the drivers themselves and the choices that they make.
