Road security lessons in high schools

Initiative details

After the pandemic, the number of lethal road accidents in the Province of Treviso has unfortunately increased exponentially and it doesn’t seem to decrease, involving not only vehicles but also pedestrians, bikers, and cyclists. Collected data indicate that young people under 30 are one of the most involved age groups in road accidents. From different points of view this is called “tragic anomaly” in the Province of Treviso.

Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

Road safety lessons in high schools are organized in collaboration with Provincial School Office which supervises and coordinates school institutes of the territory.

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

During school year 2022-2023, the Province of Treviso has promoted road safety culture in synergy with high schools of the territory offering focused training, aimed to the acquisition of useful skills and behaviour in the use of vehicles, especially in dangerous situations. Privileged targets are high school students who are obtaining their driving license to drive cars or those who have license to drive motorcycles. In this sense, the Province of Treviso organizes modulated lectures over a two-hour period in order to be integrated in the school programme (PTOF) with such flexible characteristics so that they can be implemented even in different contexts. The lecture was able to engage and stimulate the audience by providing knowledge, skills, and ability in a direct and specific way, developing and dealing with issues and problems in order to be aware that an accident is almost never inevitable, but the consequence of one or more human mistakes that have to be studied and prevented by learning how to drive safely. A variety of materials such as pamphlets and videos were used to implement lessons.

Evaluation

What has been the effect of the activities?

During the cycle of lessons on road safety carried out in the 2022-2023 school year, 24 provincial high schools and 166 classes were involved, with a total of 4825 students. Students involved have proactively participated to lessons and the school institutions confirmed a considerable interest in the road safety education model offered by strategic lessons.
The intervention’s effective efficiency in terms of the decrease of road accidents, especially amongst youths, will be measured through the Road Accident Monitoring Centre. The initiative integrates with a wider range of interventions for provincial road safety, such as awareness campaigns, interventions for road network improvement, capacity building of Law Forces, support for road accidents victims.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

Road accidents are a complex phenomenon of direct and indirect causes and responsabilities. However, although various institutions and authorities of the area can play an important role in preventing and managing accidents, it is necessary to take into consideration that responsibilities are largely individual.
Therefore, the behavioural component becomes the focus in which strategic lessons are concentrated, aiming to give young people knowledge, skills, and abilities in a direct and specific way, treating and developing themes and problems with the aim of making them understand that the accident it is almost never a uninventable, but the consequence of one or more human errors to be studied and prevented by learning to drive safely. Strategic lessons are divided into 2 modules based on the recipient’s age and that can be replicated in similar context.

How have you shared information about your project and its results?

Strategic lessons are organized and in collaboration with the Provincial School Office and the contents are diffused among participants schools. The Province promotes this educational activity through the institutional website and its social media. Furthermore, this good practice has been presented as an international model of several European projects on road safety and sustainable mobility.
