What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?

1. Since many years we have a substantiated traffic action plan in which road safety is one of our core tasks. We commit ourselves to continue with this action plan. The focus of this action plan is addressing the causes of accidents and reducing the risks of injury. Our priorities are speed control, drug- and alcohol control and the monitoring of seat belt use.
We annually spend 5112 working hours on these controls.

2. We are committed to carry out the necessary analyses of accidents in order to detect the black spots. The analysis of the accidents at these black spots should result in that partners that are involved will take the necessary measures in order to improve the road safety thoroughly.
We screen every accident that happens in our police zone.
If these screenings shows that at a particular place a high number of accidents take place, we will make a detailed analysis of these accidents, going up to 5 years back in time. This analysis should identify the causes of accidents. After the detection of the causes of accidents, we will make an action plan to eliminate the causes partially or completely. If police measures are necessary, we will take the appropriate internal action in our Police zone. If infrastructural measures are needed, we will discuss them with the road authorities and we will motivate them and provide them with advice in order to improve the infrastructure and ultimately the road safety.
The number of analysis's we will make, depends highly on the outcomes of the screening of accidents.

3. We are committed to undertake the following necessary prevention and awareness raising actions to promote road safety in the future:

a. Organised and targeted controls on the use of seat belts. We will also use the accident simulator to persuade offenders of the necessity of wearing the seatbelt.
b. An annual large-scale project designed to motivate school children to behave safely and make themselves visible in the traffic. This year we will collaborate with external partners on this project. They will reward the children in case of continuous safe behavior in traffic with recreational gifts, such as e.g. a free visit to an amusement park.
c. Annual participation in the road safety day. This is an initiative of the municipalities, the police and companies whereby all sixth-grade students are gathered in a place where they can learn about road safety issues such as e.g. the blind spot problem in six different workshops.
d. Participation in (road safety) fairs, car-free Sundays...
e. We will organise traffic classes in primary schools to teach the children on road safety themes such as safe crossing, blind spots, how secure is my school environment...
f. We will offer training to high school students to learn them how to safely cope with the dangers of traffic, and driving itself, as they are already more independent traffic participants.

In our constant work on prevention and awareness raising actions, the traffic and prevention department are closely collaborating.

Our preventive actions or projects are not only limited to alcohol (ab)use, the wearing of seatbelt and speed, but also focuse on each subdomain of road safety (such as wearing a helmet and / or fluorescent vest).
