A European Commission study has revealed a critical shortage of safe and secure parking areas (SSPAs) for professional drivers, with a current gap of 390,057 spaces expected to rise to 483,000 by 2040.
Despite some parking facilities implementing safety measures, many remain uncertified under EU standards, particularly in high-risk areas such as Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, and Spain. The study stresses the urgent need for investment to upgrade and certify existing parking sites, ensuring better protection for drivers and their vehicles.
The European Commission has already allocated funding to address the issue, with around 65 parking areas either constructed or under development. Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas emphasised that professional drivers are essential to Europe's transport system and deserve secure rest areas.
The study envisions a fully developed, safe parking network by 2040, supporting safer and more efficient transport across the EU.
