What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?
Through our Community Safety Strategy 2009-2014, we will ensure that Lancashire Fire and Rescue Services commitment to Road Safety is targeted, measured and evaluated, contributing to improved road safety by working in partnership with all partner agencies and implementing a number of initiatives.
We deliver Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) Road Safety Education package to Princes Trust Teams, a twelve week project for unemployed 16-25 year olds. The aim of the Road Safety Education package is to change young people’s attitudes towards road safety and risk taking behaviour as a driver and as a passenger. The content of the package addresses some of the key issues raised in the Government Strategy 'Tomorrows Roads, Safer for Everyone' in particular, drink driving, speeding and the wearing of seatbelts. Approximately 350 young people each year participate in the Princes Trust Programme and the Road Safety package is delivered over a two hour period.
We assist Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety in the delivery of 'Wasted Lives' road safety education package. Wasted Lives is a young driver education programme which aims to change attitudes that young people have towards taking risks on the road, to influence their driving behaviour, and ultimately to save lives. LFRS in Partnership with Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety will deliver the programme to approximately 2000 young people each year. The full Wasted Lives Programme is a One Day course, but modules from the programme can be used on shorter courses.
We have recently appointed a Road Safety Coordinator to research and map current road safety activity both internally and externally to enable effective partnership working.

We acknowledge road safety as an increased priority and reflect this position with our revised Community Safety Strategy. We fully support the preventative contribution our staff make to raod safety whilst insisting that any such contribution focuses on the Services unique position and associated opportunities. we endorse a community safety approach which involves and increased emphasis on road safety priventative activity. We also confirm that a particular focus shoul be place on risk reduction within the 17-25 age group.
