Lamberto DUOBBRAK

Initiative details

Road safety in Europe and worldwide is still tragically compromised by a high number of accidents and avoidable loss of human lives.

This is compounded by the worrying frequency of vehicle recalls for brake problems, with over 3 million units affected in just two years (ANSA data), a symptom of an intrinsic vulnerability in current systems.

The dependence on rare materials in traditional braking systems and new technologies not only creates economic instability but also generates significant geopolitical implications.

Furthermore, there remains a lack of a reliable and universal mechanical solution capable of improving braking and ensuring safety in the event of failure.

These challenges highlight the urgent need for innovative solutions like DUOBBRAK, capable of overcoming the limitations of current systems, despite the resistance, and mostly the indifference, encountered in promoting it within the industry, accelerators, and public and private institutions

Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

Currently, there are no formalized external partnerships for the implementation of DUOBBRAK. However, in the course of development and outreach activities, significant interactions have occurred with the following entities:

University of Cassino: Initially interested in the revolutionary potential of DUOBBRAK, with verbal recognition of the innovation's impact. The potential role could have been scientific validation and research support, but it did not materialize.

Motor Valley Accelerator: Despite exclusion from the program, the initial interaction represented an attempt to involve a key player in Italian automotive innovation for validation and potential implementation support.

Lamborghini: The interaction through their contest, although ending without formal evaluation, represented an attempt to present DUOBBRAK to a major manufacturer in the sector, with the potential role of adopting and integrating the technology into their vehicles.

Potential Investors (via Investors' Clubs, etc.): Although no partnerships have materialized, presentations to these individuals aimed to obtain the necessary financial support for the industrialization and commercialization phase of DUOBBRAK.

It is important to emphasize that, despite initial interest in some cases, no formal and continuous collaborations have developed. The future strategy remains focused on creating partnerships with companies in the automotive sector, component suppliers, and research institutions to bring DUOBBRAK to market.

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

The DUOBBRAK initiative has its roots in years of research, documented in its genesis on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7SSiLdFD3Y

Ideation and Design (2016-2020): Initial prototype tests led to the drafting of a revolutionary patent (filed in 2018 and issued in 2020), describing a novel operation of the overrunning clutch with an innovative mechanical application (over 100 pages, 25 claims, 11 drawings).

Prototype Development and Testing (2020-Present): A working physical model was created and made public, its effectiveness unequivocally demonstrated through videos on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wsGO4gN0W8&t=8s

The system, inherently simple and reproducible, is currently undergoing further third-party testing aimed at confirming its technological superiority for the automotive industry and all wheeled vehicles.
Outreach and Awareness Activities (2020-Present): Despite the evident potential, the promotion of DUOBBRAK has encountered significant obstacles. Instead of prompt adoption, some companies showed interest in the patent's vulnerability, with a short-sighted view of the system as a cost and a passive waiting for the title's expiration, with serious repercussions for the protection of the entire industrial base and the supply chain.

Numerous attempts to involve potential partners and investors (including contacts with EEN Italia, LazioInnova, Investors' Clubs, etc.) were unsuccessful. The presentation at the University of Cassino, while receiving recognition for its revolutionary potential ("this thing changes the world"), did not lead to concrete action by the university. Contact with the Magnificent Rector also proved fruitless.

Participation in contests and initiatives such as the Motor Valley Accelerator and a prestigious brand's contest ended negatively, often motivated by pretextual procedural reasons that prevented even the formal submission of the application.

In parallel, an activity of creating online content (social media posts, YouTube videos) to inform the public continued, often culminating in insults and warnings not to communicate, highlighting a deep-rooted resistance to innovation in the sector.
Attempts to involve public and private entities (even if met with distrust or indifference).

2025 - My current application to the ESRC is part of this outreach activity.

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?

The most effective aspect of the implementation, so far, has been the clear and convincing practical demonstration of DUOBBRAK's effectiveness through the working prototype and its video documentation.

The tangible reduction in stopping distances, visible on our YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wsGO4gN0W8&t=8s, has been an irrefutable argument for the system's validity. This visual evidence has made it possible to communicate the benefits of DUOBBRAK in terms of road safety directly and comprehensibly, overcoming the technical complexity of the patent.

The main challenges encountered in the implementation have been the deep-rooted inertia and distrust of the automotive sector towards innovative solutions, particularly if purely mechanical. Despite the data on recalls for brake problems and DUOBBRAK's evident potential to improve safety and reduce long-term costs, there has been a prevalent focus on maintaining the status quo or exploring more complex and expensive electronic solutions.

Further obstacles have included:

The difficulty in gaining the attention and concrete interest of corporate decision-makers and investors, often more focused on emerging technologies or short-term strategies.

The "silencing" or removal of online informational content, which has limited the reach of our communication and the possibility of raising awareness among a wider audience.

The need to overcome prejudices and skepticism towards an advanced mechanical system, in an era where electronics dominate the automotive sector.

The lack of concrete support from accelerators and institutions, which could have provided crucial resources and contacts for implementation.

Evaluation

Please summarise how you have evaluated the initiative’s impact (e.g. social media reach, survey, feedback forms, statistics).

The impact assessment of DUOBBRAK has been conducted primarily through the following methods:

Views and Interactions on Social Media and YouTube: The analysis of views, comments, shares, and likes on DUOBBRAK's demonstration videos on YouTube and social media posts has provided an indication of the interest and reach achieved by the message. Comments, although sometimes negative, have nonetheless represented an interaction and a reaction to the concept.

Verbal Feedback and Informal Recognition: The verbal recognition received during the presentation at the University of Cassino ("this thing changes the world") represented a qualitative indication of the potential impact perceived by experts in the academic sector.

Potential Interest from Sector Entities (despite lack of concretization): The initial interest, although not followed by concrete actions, from automotive companies and accelerators suggested an implicit recognition of DUOBBRAK's potential in solving existing problems.

Technical Analysis and Simulations based on the patent and prototype: The detailed design of the patent and the results of tests on the physical model represent a form of intrinsic technical evaluation of the system's effectiveness in reducing stopping distances. Although not statistics on real accidents, they provide a solid basis for predicting a positive impact on road safety.

It is important to note that, given the current stage of development and the lack of large-scale implementation, statistics on the actual reduction of accidents, injuries, or fatalities are not yet available. However, preliminary data and technical assessments suggest significant potential in this regard.

What has been the effect of the activities?

The main effect of the activities carried out so far has been to generate awareness about the potential of DUOBBRAK as an innovative solution to improve road safety, although this awareness has not yet translated into concrete adoption by the sector.

Specifically, the observed effects include:

Effective Technical Demonstration: The working prototype and its video documentation have convincingly demonstrated DUOBBRAK's ability to significantly reduce stopping distances, highlighting a substantial improvement compared to traditional systems.

Generation of Interest (despite lack of concretization): Presentations and interactions, although not resulting in partnerships, have sparked initial interest from some entities in the sector and the academic world, indicating a recognition of the potential value of the innovation.

Creation of a Public Discourse (limited): Online content has contributed to creating a debate, albeit limited, on the importance of road safety and the need for new solutions, reaching an audience that has interacted with the shared materials.

Identification of Systemic Obstacles: Negative reactions, indifference, and "silencing" have highlighted the systemic challenges and resistance to innovation within the automotive sector and the relevant institutions.

In summary, the main effect has been to demonstrate the technical potential of DUOBBRAK and to begin a path of raising awareness, while encountering significant barriers to adoption and collaboration.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

DUOBBRAK represents a good example of improving road safety for several fundamental reasons:

Proven Effectiveness (at the prototype level): Its ability to drastically reduce stopping distances, demonstrated through real physical model tests, offers a concrete potential to prevent a significant number of road accidents and mitigate their severity.

Guaranteed Braking in Case of Failure: The unique feature of ensuring braking even in the event of failure of the main system eliminates one of the most dangerous causes of accidents, offering a superior level of intrinsic safety.

Reliable and Universal Mechanical Solution: Being a purely mechanical system, DUOBBRAK potentially offers greater reliability and less dependence on complex electronic components, making it applicable to various vehicle categories and contexts, including those with less advanced infrastructure.

Total mechanical reliability is ensured because, as per claim 12 of the patent, the mechanical component never experiences high overrunning speeds nor is it ever subjected to high torques, both of which (present in other known applications) lead to damage of the clutch.

In addition to reliability, it is important to emphasize the fully AUTOMATIC operation without the aid of any electronics.

Potential for Higher Safety Standards: The effectiveness of DUOBBRAK paves the way for the definition of new and stricter safety standards for vehicles, with the possibility of prohibiting the registration of vehicles not equipped with braking systems that are equally effective and equally reliable thanks to the now possible realization of the TRUE DUAL BRAKE SYSTEM.

Impact on the Reduction of Casualties and Injuries: The widespread adoption of DUOBBRAK has the potential to significantly contribute to the reduction of the number of deaths and serious injuries on European and global roads, aligning with the primary objectives of the European Road Safety Charter.

How have you shared information about your project and its results?

Information about the DUOBBRAK project and its results (primarily the demonstration of the prototype's effectiveness) has been shared through various channels:

YouTube Platform: A dedicated YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@duobbrak hosts videos on how to build and test it, illustrating the operation of DUOBBRAK and the results of tests on the physical model, making the information accessible to a global audience.

Social Media (LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.): Posts and articles on social media have been used to present DUOBBRAK, highlight its benefits for road safety, and comment on issues in the sector.

Direct Presentations: Presentations have been made to potential partners, investors, and academic institutions (such as the University of Cassino) to illustrate the innovation and its potential advantages.

Participation in Contests and Initiatives: The application and participation (even if unsuccessful) in initiatives such as the Motor Valley Accelerator, direct contacts with Brembo and the Chief Officer of Dallara, and the Lamborghini contest represented an attempt to give visibility to the project within the sector.

Direct Communications (Email): Numerous emails have been sent to potential stakeholders, such as the Enterprise Europe Network Italia, investors' clubs, and companies in the automotive sector, to present DUOBBRAK and solicit interest and collaboration.

Although the reach of some of these activities has been limited by the difficulties encountered, the goal has always been to spread awareness of DUOBBRAK and its potential benefits for road safety to a broad and diverse audience.
