What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?

Through our Integrated Risk Management Plan Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service (HFRS) take into account the changing needs and risks within our communities to deliver our services effectively so that we can make life safer.

HFRS has, with our partners, produced a multi-agency road safety programme, 'Safe Drive, Stay Alive' aimed at the 17-20 year old age group to raise awareness of the consequences of being involved in a road traffic collision.

We will deliver our 'Safe Drive, Stay Alive' to educational and training establishments in Hampshire, providing 20 events and engaging with approx 5,000 young people each year

Along with our partners we will develop road safety interventions to identified risk groups through risk intelligence and data analysis.

In our commitment to work with partners, we will support integrated working with local authority road safety teams with 2 dedicated officers to provide a coordinated approach and effective use of our resources.

Our School Safety Education Team (14 personnel) have now incorporated Road safety into our established schools education programme where our aim is that each child in the county of Hampshire will receive Safety Education once during each phase of their education.

We actively recognise personnel´s ability to create innovative and integrated approaches to reducing risk and these are identified on an 'initiatives register' where road safety measures can be shared and implemented throughout the Fire Service.

HFRS will continually review our response activity ensuring that we respond quickly to road traffic collisions with the appropriate resources.

We will continue to review and develop the skills of our fire fighters so that they can be both safe and highly skilled. Year 1 - Review and development of Competency Based training, identify specific criteria and knowledge and understanding requirement, Year 2 & 3 - Implementation of 2 year programme for Operational personnel (1,500 firefighters) and evaluation.
The Service World Championship Vehicle Extrication Team will continue to perfect new extrication techniques and carry out evaluations on equipment before it is used by Service personnel. The team of 12 will also promote community road safety work at 6 public events per year in support of the Service's plan to 'make life safer'.

In line with Our Plan, we will ensure that all road safety activities undertaken by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service personnel are subjected to an evaluation process to identify their effectiveness.

Your knowledge

To address road safety issues it is important to adopt the 5 E’s approach but this must be underpinned by the 6th E - Engage with partners. Road safety has to be tackled from a number of fronts and each agency has their particular strength but again needs to be supported and aided by others.
When targeting a particular road user group, give consideration to the impact and influences of other road users.
