The European Commission is participating in the Fourth Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech, reaffirming its commitment to improving road safety worldwide. As a global advocate for safer roads, the Commission continues to support data-driven policymaking and impactful initiatives that help reduce road casualties.
A key announcement includes EU-funded technical support for the African Road Safety Observatory, hosted by the African Union Commission. This initiative aims to strengthen the observatory’s capacity to address road safety challenges in African nations. Additionally, the EU is finalising a grant to support African civil society organisations through the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, empowering local communities to implement effective road safety projects.
Through Horizon Europe, the EU is also funding cutting-edge research to apply the Safe System approach in Africa. The Afro-SAFE project focuses on data-driven road safety strategies, while TRANS-SAFE explores innovative transport solutions and sustainable mobility.
A dedicated side event at the conference highlights the work of the EU-funded Eastern Partnership Road Safety Observatory, which enhances regional cooperation in data collection and policy development. These strategic efforts underline the European Commission’s leadership in fostering global road safety improvements.
