Driving under the influence program for high school students

Initiative details

The main road safety challenge that was addressed by the project is driving under the influence (DUI) and the impaired judgement and delayed reaction time as consequences. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs significantly impairs a driver's cognitive and motor functions, leading to poor decision-making and slower responses to hazards.

ARV-auto battles this challenge by:
o Creating awareness campaigns: Implementing targeted public education campaigns highlighting the dangers of impaired driving and promoting sober alternatives such as designated drivers and ride-sharing.
o Supporting law enforcement: Collaborating with local police on sobriety checkpoints and enhanced DUI patrols, especially during high-risk periods (e.g., weekends, holidays).
o Doing policy advocacy: Supporting stricter DUI laws, including lower blood alcohol content (BAC) limits and the use of ignition interlock devices for repeat offenders.

Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

Police Officers – Shared their experiences and explained the real-life consequences of driving under the influence, based on situations they encounter in their daily work.
Road Safety Psychologists – Explained how people make decisions behind the wheel, how reaction time is influenced by personality traits, and discussed the psychological consequences of driving while intoxicated, especially after being involved in a traffic accident.
Driving Instructors – Spoke about the responsibility that comes with driving, the importance of proper training, and the need for a responsible attitude on the road. They emphasized that a driver’s license is not just a document, but a reflection of one’s knowledge, skills, reaction time, awareness, perception, and ability to assess and respond appropriately in various traffic situations.

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

Over the past years, we have been actively implementing a road safety education initiative focused on preventing driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Our primary activities include organizing targeted workshops and interactive lessons aimed at raising awareness among young people, particularly in secondary schools across Lithuania.
Working in close cooperation with local police officers, certified driving instructors, and road safety psychologists, we have developed and delivered a series of specialized lectures that address the dangers and consequences of impaired driving. These sessions are designed to be engaging and informative, combining real-life case studies, psychological insights, and legal perspectives to ensure a well-rounded understanding of the issue.
In addition to theoretical lessons, we also include practical demonstrations – we use alcohol, drug and fatigue simulation glasses in training to give students practical experience of the associated risks.
These activities are conducted throughout the academic year, with the program expanding each year to reach more schools and communities. Our goal is to equip young drivers with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to make safe, responsible decisions on the road.

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?

What Worked Well:
One of the most successful aspects of the project has been the strong collaboration between different stakeholders—police officers, driving instructors, road safety psychologists, and schools. This multidisciplinary approach ensured that students received a well-rounded education on the risks of driving under the influence. Interactive elements such as alcohol, drug and fatigue simulation glasses were especially effective in engaging students and helping them understand the real-life impact of alcohol and drug use for reaction time. The involvement of experienced professionals also added credibility and depth to the sessions, making the content more impactful.

Challenges Overcome:
One of the main challenges was coordinating schedules between schools and external partners. Adaptability and strong partnerships were key to overcoming these challenges.

Evaluation

Please summarise how you have evaluated the initiative’s impact (e.g. social media reach, survey, feedback forms, statistics).

To evaluate the impact, we conducted short pre- and post-session surveys with students to measure changes in knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions related to driving under the influence. The surveys showed a noticeable improvement in awareness of the dangers and a stronger commitment to responsible behavior.
Where possible, we collaborated with local authorities to analyze statistics on traffic violations and DUI-related incidents in the regions where our program was active, to look for long-term trends.

What has been the effect of the activities?

Over the past years, our road safety education activities have reached more than 1,000 students across Lithuania through workshops, lectures, and interactive sessions. The effect has been significant in increasing awareness of the risks associated with driving under the influence and promoting safer driving behavior among young people.

Post-session surveys indicate that participants reported a stronger understanding of the dangers of impaired driving and a personal commitment to avoid such behavior. Feedback from teachers and local police also suggests a noticeable improvement in students’ attitudes toward road safety.
The initiative is particularly effective due to its multidisciplinary approach—combining psychology, law enforcement, and driver education.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

Our initiative is a strong example of improving road safety because it directly targets young, inexperienced drivers through engaging, educational, and evidence-based activities. By combining the expertise of police officers, driving instructors, and road safety psychologists, we provide students with a well-rounded understanding of the risks of driving under the influence and how personal choices impact road safety.

What makes this initiative effective is its interactive format, practical demonstrations (such as alcohol, drug and fatigue simulation glasses and reaction time measuring equipment, simulation for measuring reaction time), and real-life experiences shared by professionals. This approach not only raises awareness but also encourages long-term behavioral change.

How have you shared information about your project and its results?

We have shared information about our project and its results through various communication channels. Locally, we presented our work at school events, municipal meetings, and road safety forums.
