DEFENSIVE DRIVING IN VIRTUAL REALITY

Initiative details

Our initiative addresses critical road safety challenges that are often overlooked in traditional driver education. Most driving schools focus on basic vehicle operation, but not on real-life risk anticipation, distraction management, or defensive mindset.

Key problems tackled by our VR Defensive Driving System include:

Driver distraction, especially due to smartphones and infotainment systems

Poor anticipation of traffic risks, particularly in urban and mixed traffic

Lack of situational awareness and understanding of the “big picture” around the vehicle

Insufficient consideration for other road users, including vulnerable groups

Specific risks related to pedestrians and cyclists, especially in city environments

Our project empowers drivers of all ages and experience levels to build mental habits that keep them and others safe – by learning to observe more, react earlier, and drive smarter.

Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

We successfuly cooperated with our local IT partner GAME THERAPY who contributed with their great experience in VR application programming

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

This is a long-term initiative designed to transform the way drivers are trained in defensive driving. In the past year, we’ve focused on developing and testing an innovative Virtual Reality (VR) application tailored for various driver profiles. This includes young drivers, professional fleet drivers, and even those with driving anxiety or declining confidence.

Activities carried out:

Scenario design: Based on real-world crash data and high-risk driving behaviors

App development: In cooperation with a local IT partner

Pilot testing: With selected driver groups, including those who had limited prior training

Feedback collection and adaptation: Adjusting scenarios and difficulty based on reactions

This development phase took place over the course of one year, and we are now entering the implementation and market rollout phase.

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?

We are currently in the early stages of implementation, which gives us the opportunity to test and fine-tune our approach. One major success is the positive feedback from test users who reported increased awareness and better anticipation of risky situations.

What worked well:

Seamless collaboration with our IT partner GAME THERAPY

Realistic scenario design reflecting real-world traffic risks

Engaged pilot users, especially among anxious or inexperienced drivers

Challenges:

Communicating the value of VR-based education to more traditional organizations

Finding the right channels to reach various driver segments

Creating content suitable for both individual use and corporate fleet training

Our next step is a strategic marketing campaign and outreach to HR and safety managers responsible for driver safety in companies.

Evaluation

Please summarise how you have evaluated the initiative’s impact (e.g. social media reach, survey, feedback forms, statistics).

The application includes built-in evaluation features. Each training session is assessed based on:

Reaction times

Risk awareness

Adherence to defensive driving principles

This allows us to monitor individual progress over time and identify key training gaps. In addition to the app metrics, we’ve collected direct user feedback and survey responses from our pilot training groups.

Key evaluation mechanisms:

In-app performance scores

User satisfaction surveys

Pre- and post-training self-assessments

As the application reaches more users, we plan to collect larger datasets and partner with companies to analyze changes in incident rates and driver behavior after using our VR program.

What has been the effect of the activities?

Our initial test phase has shown promising results. Feedback from early users, especially less experienced and anxious drivers, confirmed that the VR experience helps them feel more confident and better prepared for risky situations.

While we are still in the early implementation phase, we aim to reach:

Hundreds of individual drivers through direct sales and training sessions

Dozens of companies via safety managers and HR professionals

The system is particularly effective because it offers a safe, repeatable and engaging learning experience – something that traditional lectures or e-learning modules cannot deliver. It complements other defensive driving trainings by offering a hands-on, immersive practice tool.

We anticipate measurable improvements in reaction time, hazard recognition, and post-training confidence. Impact will initially be local and national, with clear potential for international scaling.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

This project is a strong example of practical innovation in road safety. It is easy to use, affordable, and scalable – making it attractive for companies and individual users alike. What sets it apart is that it brings defensive driving training to life, allowing drivers to experience risky situations in a safe, controlled way.

The VR app works for all driver types – young learners, senior drivers, or professionals – and can be implemented with just a computer and VR headset. Other organizations can adopt similar models by adjusting the training content to their local traffic context.

Our initiative can inspire others to use modern technology in a more engaging, effective way to reduce accidents and build a safer traffic culture.

How have you shared information about your project and its results?

We are preparing a comprehensive communication plan to promote the VR app, including:

Paid Google and YouTube ads

Social media campaigns (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)

Professional outreach to HR and fleet managers in companies

Presentation at industry events and safety conferences

The app will be available via well-known VR platforms such as Meta Horizon Store and Steam, making it easily accessible to individual users.
