The organisation Apvienība "Pilsēta cilvēkiem" (Association "City for People") was established in September 2017 to advocate for better city planning in Riga and other Latvian cities. Our mission is to promote safe, comfortable, and fast travel whether you walk, cycle, drive, or use public transportation. Since the 1960s, streets in Latvian cities have been designed with cars in mind, with little consideration given to other options. As a result, more and more people are choosing to travel even relatively short distances by car. Because of this, thousands of Rigans have to endure huge traffic jams during rush hour. The good news is that this issue can be corrected by redesigning the streets with pedestrians and cyclists in mind, as well as by prioritising public transportation. By encouraging the use of alternative modes of transport to driving, we can reduce traffic for everyone.
