Transport represents a crucial sector of the economy. This publication provides an overview of the most recent and most pertinent annual transport related statistics in Europe.
It covers the European Union and its 28 Member States and, as far as possible, the current EU candidate countries and the EFTA countries. The content of this pocketbook is based on a range of sources including Eurostat, international organisations, national statistics and, where no data was available, on our own estimates. Our estimates have mainly been produced to get an idea of the EU total.
A recent assessment of the burden of disease from noise by the World Health Organization (WHO) confirms that traffic noise is a major cause of environmental health problems. At present, some 210 million Europeans are regularly exposed to road traffic noise levels exceeding 55 decibels and 35 million are exposed to these levels of rail noise, pursuant to recent studies. Health impacts frequently occur above this level, according to the WHO and the EU.
