Non-contact practical driver training in Additional driver training programme

Initiative details

Few problems appear in Additional driver training program which is held in Lithuania for novice drivers and drivers whose license was suspended in case of hard traffic violation:
- the practical driving lesson is ineffective in terms of educating safe driving
- legal collision: drivers with suspended license drive in public traffic during the lesson
- restrictions and risks of pandemy have set the limitations of traditional practical driving

Project activities

If you work together with external partners, list the most important partners and briefly describe their role.

Partners were not incorporated.

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

The practical driving lesson model was modified and transferred from traditional driver training in public traffic to a training ground with built-in street network and slippery road track with skid pan. This way contactless practical driver training was introduced.

Evaluation

What has been the effect of the activities?

1. Additional driver training became possible during the pandemy restriction period. This was the only way for many people to renew their driving licenses.
2. The efficiency of driver training was significantly increased - since the training was held in a prebuild and special-designed street network with slippery road track and skid pan. Risk education finally became available for the ones with highest rates of risk.
3. Traffic safety increased and legal collision solved: the drivers whose license was suspended and not yet activated, were finally saved from being forced to drive in public traffic.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

1. The concept introduced by the initiative gives the possibility for drivers with suspended license to complete the Additional driver training course without driving in public traffic.
2. The introduction of slippery road track with skidpan allows the course to become risk education - efficient. The novice drivers and drivers who made a hard traffic violation - the ones with highest tendency of wrong road danger estimation became available to use the educational advantages of practical risk-education training, which is known as effective in some countries of Europe.

Supporting materials

The slippery road track with skidpan is used as an element in risk-education training.
Trainee-driver drives alone in an non-public training ground with buil-in street network.
The commands are given via radio while the instructor guides the trainee-driver in the streets of the training ground. Driving data is recorded and a video record of driver is made.
