I drive a safe car – summer vehicle courtesy inspection

Technical Secondary School Complex No. 1 in Warsaw ( Zespol Szkol Samochodowych i Licealnych Nr 1) holds a cyclical biannual event ‘I drive a safe car – summer vehicle courtesy inspection’. It sets an excellent example for the others as it’s aimed at raising drivers’ awareness about the importance of maintaining the vehicle in a proper condition, which has a crucial impact on road safety and accidents prevention.
Our initiative is one of the most important actions conducted by schools in the field of improving traffic safety. It engages institutions responsible for legislating traffic laws and regulations as well as enforcing road rules and keeping drivers safe , namely The Warsaw Police Department of Road Traffic or The Social Insurance Institution. The school initiative plays a key role in improving awareness among drivers, providing both practical and useful tips to stay safe on the road and taking care of other road users. Even though the event is held in Warsaw, information on its results and effects is spread across the country by TV networks, radio stations, social media and the press.

With our strategic partners we share the matters of mutual concern: improving road safety, developing the right attitude about driving, reducing car accidents and motor vehicle collisions, avoiding road hazards and dealing with unsafe driving.
On account of this, we have decided to submit an application and share our good practices with the Excellence in Road Safety Awards 2021.

What problem did you address/are you addressing?
In cooperation with the Warsaw Police Traffic Department and The Social Insurance Institution at our school vehicle diagnostic station periodically are organised preventive diagnostic checks conducted by our school students, supervised by their teachers of technical subjects, some police officers and the Polish Insurance Chamber representatives. Mainly, the service consists of checking basic vehicle components which have an enormous impact on road safety. The following issues are checked, such as : tyre condition , lighting, brake system, steering system and suspension. The average outcome of organised checks shows that the majority of cars are in a fairly good technical condition but it occurs that some vehicles ought to be repaired. The police officers involved in action underline that participants deserve to be named as highly responsible, maintaining an excellent culture of road manners. Our event has gained in popularity and every owner of the car who decided to take an active part in our initiative is extremely satisfied with our services and repairs. As a result they are interested in attending the forthcoming checks. The event is held twice a year, services and checks are not mandatory, yet they are free of charge. In winter, taking into account the season, especially severe weather condition, downfall, quick failing light and winter school breaks to come, we provide and support road users raising their awareness of keeping and maintaining vehicles in a proper technical condition with particular reference to preventive checks regarding tyres condition, lights and exhaust system performance, and as well as vehicle equipment which ought to be in compliance with road law and regulation. In summer, before leisure time and long trips during summer holidays with families it is necessary to make road users aware that a technical vehicle condition plays a vital importance for road safety. In addition, under pandemic circumstances we provided the interior ozonation service which had a positive impact on car occupants' good mood and comfort. Additionally , the windscreen washer was filled up which is very important during driving in harsh weather conditions, in particular caused by heavy downfall.

Is there a plan for continuing these activities in the coming years?
The initiative is planned to be held for the forthcoming years as a periodic biannual event.
How did you disseminate/are you disseminating results or how did you promote/are you promoting your initiative?
Interestingly, the local media broadly takes part in broadcasting the event ( e.g. press briefings with the participants of the initiatives), providing the most up-to-date information, carrying out some interviews with vehicle drivers or those, who by chance, turn up at motor vehicle diagnostic stations. The majority of drivers claim that they learnt about our initiative through the media. A school logo identification sticker with the slogan ‘ I drive a safe car ‘ is placed on every vehicle which undergoes a technical inspection.
How did you evaluate/are you evaluating the success of your action?
With each new event, we notice the increased attendance of road users and greater interest in our actions. More and more tests and periodic inspections are carried out on that day in our vehicle diagnostic station. Some drivers wait in a long line in order to be provided a full range of diagnostic and inspection services and hence hit the road safely. In case of a car's malfunctions or detected problems, the owner makes an instant appointment to have them fixed and repaired. Undoubtedly, the greatest benefit of this approach is the safety of the car occupants and other road users.
