Name of action

We looked at delivering the DHL foundation Truck and Child Safety programme. This scheme works with the TACS national programme run by the DHL UK Foundation, using local truck drivers and employees. It’s free of charge to schools, and delivers these vital road safety messages to children via interactive on-site demonstrations using a real lorry, along with a class-based presentation by Somerset Road Safety staff. A need was identified that this type of intervention was needed. This was due to the large scale Hinkley Point C construction. This would increase the amount of HGVs around the Bridgwater and Cannington areas of Somerset. Our team of 5 Road Safety Trainers delivered TACS to over 5,000 children between April and December. The aim of the presentations are to make children aware of the dangers of being to close to these vehicles. Once the children have had a short presentation they then go to the playground for a practical demonstration with the lorry. This involves them taking turns to sit in the cab of the lorry. This is to show them about the blind spots for the drivers. Showing the children that the visibility is very limited for the driver if you are behind or to the side of the vehicle as a pedestrian or cyclist. There are other demonstrations as well highlighting to the children never to go underneath the vehicle to collect a lost ball. This demonstration again shows the children some of the dangers associated with such a large vehicle.

What has been the effect of the activities?
Our main source of feedback comes from evaluation forms completed by the Schools and also we have sight of the feedback for the Haulage firm.
