Street Portals Tarot: Reframing Road Safety Through Symbolic Perception

What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?

Street Portals Tarot is a perception-based road safety initiative that aims to increase attentiveness, understanding, and reflective awareness in road users.

By translating familiar traffic signs into a symbolic and participatory system, the project encourages people to consciously perceive the road environment, recognise patterns and meanings, and reflect on behaviour, responsibility, and risk.

The initiative focuses on urban mobility contexts, where traffic signs and spatial cues are frequent, layered, and behaviourally relevant.

The initiative does not focus on instruction or enforcement, but on activation, engagement, and long-term awareness, making road safety personally meaningful and memorable. By fostering attentive perception and reflective engagement, the initiative supports preventive approaches that contribute to safer road use behaviour.

The system does not need to be used primarily as a tabletop card game. Instead, it can be applied as a reflective framework that encourages participants to engage with and interpret the symbols they encounter in real traffic environments. The system’s structure allows for complementary qualitative or quantitative evaluation when applied in educational, urban, or campaign-based contexts.

Estimated impact & ways of measuring

The initiative aims to increase awareness, attentiveness, and reflective behaviour in road users.
Impact can be assessed through qualitative feedback from participants, observations during pilot implementations, engagement levels in educational or awareness formats, and follow-up evaluations in cooperation with partners.

Resources (personnel, budget, etc.)

The initiative is currently developed and coordinated by a small, dedicated research and design team. Resources include conceptual development, visual design, prototyping, and facilitation. Further resources will be allocated depending on partnerships and pilot implementations.

Your knowledge

The project builds on interdisciplinary knowledge from artistic practice, design research, and scientific work.

Through the organisation’s leadership by a visual artist with a strong focus on symbols and symbolic systems, the project draws on long-standing experience with interpretation models, visual codes, and meaning-making processes, particularly in relation to public space and collective perception.

This perspective is complemented by previous research activities in a scientific context, as well as entrepreneurial experience in developing independent projects and products.

Street Portals Tarot represents the first project in which these strands are deliberately combined into a single, applied system for road safety communication and perception, bridging artistic insight, analytical thinking, and practical implementation.

Eventual partnerships in your commitment

At this stage, the initiative is developed independently. Strategic partnerships with insurers, mobility organisations, educational institutions, and public stakeholders are envisaged for pilot implementations and further development.
