On 23 April 2026, the National Office for Traffic Medicine at Trinity College Dublin delivered a live online Continuing Professional Development (CPD) webinar to launch the 13th Edition of Ireland’s Sláinte agus Tiomáint Medical Fitness to Drive Guidelines.
The event was attended by 116 participants and was accredited for 2 CPD credits by both the Irish College of General Practitioners and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. It provided clinicians and allied health professionals with an overview of the principal updates to the 2026 Guidelines and their practical application when advising patients on medical fitness to drive.
The programme also included two specialist presentations. Prof Desmond O’Neill, Director of the National Office for Traffic Medicine, delivered a session on medications and driving. Dr David Carr, Professor of Geriatric Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis and an internationally recognised expert in dementia, delivered a session on dementia and driving. These presentation topics were selected in response to feedback from healthcare professionals, who had identified medications and dementia as areas in which further guidance and practical discussion were particularly needed.
The initiative strengthened professional understanding of medical fitness to drive, promoted consistent and evidence-informed clinical practice, and supported safer mobility for people living with medical conditions. Following the event, the updated Guidelines and presentation materials were made available through the National Office for Traffic Medicine website.
