Hosted by the Road Safety Authority, Health and Safety Authority and An Garda Síochán, the ERSharter seminar of Ireland took place the 10th of October in Dublin. Called « Driving for work », the seminar focused on the Work-related road safety issues and more specifically on Grey Fleet management. The main objective of the seminar was to give employers tools to implement employees targeted road safety measures and to create awareness around the grey fleet problematic.
The seminar was opened by the welcome speech of Deidre Finnerty - Contract Manager at the Road Safety Authority. After the visualisation of the Driving for Work Employer Responsibility ad, Ms. Finnerty gave also an introduction on the grey fleet problematic as first presentation.
Superintedent Eddie Golden from the Garda national Roads Policing Bureau presented the big killer of the road. These Killers are linked to inappropriate behaviours like speeding, not wearing the seatbelt, using the phone while driving, etc. Even if they are well known by everyone, these behaviours are still responsible for an important part of road fatalities and injuries.
Senior Policy inspector at the health and Safety Authority, Deirde Sinnott McFeat presented the Key requirements for a good management of the grey fleet.
The first part of the seminar was closed with a presentation of Tyre Safety problems and requirements from the Road Safety Authority.
The second part of the seminar started with the presentation of two case studies. Fiona O’ Donnell - Head of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Buildings and Infrastructure, Europe, presented the Driver safety management linked to Jacobs story. Clare McTernan – EHS advisor at Irish Water, presented how the Irish Water company is managing the grey fleet risks.
The Health and Safety Authority provide a lot of tools and resources for companies willing to implement employees targeted road safety measures. Deirdre Sinnott McFeat gave a good overview of what the Driving For Work website offers as support.
On behalf of the European Road Safety Charter, Félix Vandemeulebroek, presented the ongoing phase of the Charter. He explained what is the Charter, who are its members, what are the tools and guidelines offered on the website, as well as why and how can one join and what can one do for road safety in its own community.
Attended by approximately 170 persons, the seminar was a great success and as discussed during the lunch, some new Irish members will join the charter while others will renew their commitments and activities on the charter’s website.
