Congratulations to Métropole de Lyon for their winning project, 'Safer surroundings for secondary schools'!
Since 2021, Métropole de Lyon has led a comprehensive effort to enhance safety around all 120 secondary schools in the metropolitan area. Targeting students aged 11 to 16, the initiative began with in-depth data analysis, accident reports, and surveys with cities and school principals to identify site-specific risks.
In response, public spaces were redesigned and adapted to student needs with infrastructure upgrades, including wider pavements, speed-reducing features, improved crossings, and welcoming gathering areas. Students played an active role through workshops, training, and participation in work programmes, helping shape safer environments and fostering a sense of civic responsibility.
Complementing the physical changes, a road safety education programme was launched to promote responsible behaviour and reinforce daily safety habits. The programme has already involved nearly 20 secondary schools and reached more than 13,000 children, supporting safer mobility and encouraging lifelong awareness of public space use.
