What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) undertakes detailed analysis of Road Traffic Collisions (RTC) incidents attended by operational personnel which is used to populate a comprehensive RTC database. Information collated by NFRS is then combined with data provided by Northumbria Police, Northumberland County Council (NCC) Highways and the health authority to provide an holistic insight into RTC issues within Northumberland. This information is subsequently used by Northumberland Road Safety Group to set targets and objectives in order to reduce RTC fatalities and injuries. Our commitment is to:
    * identify key risk groups
    * identify key strategic partners
    * develop a road safety strategy for Northumberland drawing upon identified best practice
    * work in partnership to address driver/pedestrian attitude and behaviour
    * support and lobby for ongoing improvements in vehicle safety
    * work to improve the transport infrastructure around known risk areas
    relevant indicators include; official statistics from the Office of National Statistics, Department for Transport, Department of Health, NFRS, Police, Health and NCC
We will:
    * Develop a range of educational initiatives based on progressive teaching methodology and aimed at target groups
    * develop strategic objectives and performance indicators
    * play an active role in the Northumberland Road Safety Group
    * RTC fatality and injury reduction to be established as core activity for NFRS community safety and operational personnel
    * RTC reduction will be a core component of NFRS Community Safety Education Strategy and reflected within NFRS Integrated Risk Management Plan, Community Protection, Community Safety and individual Service Plans.
   The Northumberland Road Safety Group consists of NFRS, NCC Highways and Transport, Police, Road Respect, Northumberland schools, North East Ambulance Service and Northumbria Area Partnerships (North, South and West)
 Group advisors and/or invited observers include; RoSPA, Government Office North East, NHS, FBU, CFOA Road Safety Group, Institute of Advanced Motorists, Northumberland Safeguarding Children Board, LARSOA, Brake and insurance industry

NFRS consider it essential to review information from a wide range of sources and to access expertise form a number of different organisations and partners including; police, ambulance, health, road safety groups, highways agency, NCC, NFRS community protection, NFRS performance management and NFRS programme development.
 
National and regional expertise is sought from Government Office North East, Department for Transport, Department of Health, Communities and Local Government.
