What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?

ASFINAG commits to the complete implementation of the 130 actions of the ASFINAG Road Safety Programme 2020 to reach the ambitious goal of reducing the number of fatalities on Austrian motorways and expressways by another 50%.

The 130 actions include constructional extensions as well as concrete development and research projects, surveillance and quality enhancing actions. The actions are divided into 13 fields of action and the degree of implementation will be evaluated every year.

1.       Safety Standards in the Existing Network: e.g. annual implementation of detailed Road Safety Inspections on at least 150 km of the network, ASFINAG-Pilots: detection of quality deficits in the network by frequent drivers, increased use of rumble strips
2.       Extension and Improvement of the Network: e.g. median barriers for all 4-lane motorways and expressways, Road Safety Audit (RSA)
3.       Traffic Management and Telematics: e.g. real-time traffic control, strategic concept for video surveillance on road sections with increased accident rates, investigate the introduction of "virtual emergency lanes"
4.       Tunnel Safety: e.g. shortening of distances between escape routes
5.       Roadwork Zones: e.g. quick reaction to inputs to the ASFINAG Service Centre and from "ASFINAG Pilots", short-term roadwork zones integrated into the roadwork zone management system
6.       Fog Accidents: e.g. evaluation of the influence of the fog warning system on driver behaviour
7.       Wrong-way Driving: e.g. identification of black-spots and treatment of locations where wrong-way driving originated, new measures to improve the traffic guidance in problem areas
8.       Heavy Goods Vehicle Safety (dangerous goods, special transports): e.g. extension plan for control sites, prohibition on overtaking for heavy goods vehicles: continuous analysis and extension where appropriate
9.       Motorcycle Safety: e.g. monitoring of motorcycle accidents and appropriate implementation of countermeasures, routine cleaning of the road, especially at the beginning of the motorcycle season and after accidents
10.     Communication and Awareness Raising: e.g. safety dictionary on the ASFINAG-Website, awareness-building campaigns on the basis of problem areas in accident statistics (e.g. seatbelt/child restraint system campaigns)
11.     Enforcement: e.g. concept for the allocation of enforcement infrastructure, seatbelt and child restraint system surveillance: increased collaboration with the police
12.     Research and Development: e.g. develop an integrated database for a safety management system, create an accident prediction model
13.     Employee Safety: e.g. equip new ASFINAG fleet cars with event data recorders, expand driver safety training to all employees with the corresponding work activities

The road safety programme has been printed with a run of 4.000 in German and 500 in English. The electronic versions are available on the new web presence of ASFINAG. Within the company-internal intranet every user can access the programme via a direct link.

The essential information on the road safety programme is made accessible for the general public through advertisements in print media.

The development and implementation of the road safety programme affects all essential organisational entities within the ASFINAG group and is technically monitored by the Austrian Road Safety Board and the federal ministry for traffic, innovation and technology.
