Low cost data collection and awareness raising for slowly moving unstable terrain in the vicinity of traffic infastructure

Initiative details

The road safety challenge lies within slowly moving unstable terrain in the vicinity of roads, railways and waterways that is not monitored at all. Dismantling of parts of the mass would result in severe damage to the infrastructure and vehicles/persons passing by.

Please describe the project activities you carried/are carrying out and the time period over which these were implemented.

In March 2026 five GeoNetSee sensors have been installed along the A2 Southern Motorway in the area of Aspang to monitor unstable terrain. The monitoring will last until March 2027. Furthermore the Danube Collaboration Centre has been established to share data from pilot sites in 9 different countries in the Danube Region.

In terms of implementation, what worked well and what challenges did you need to overcome?

The system shows good robustness at this pilot site due to its suitability for exposed field conditions and the relatively protected sensor positions above the motorway. The solar-powered configuration supports autonomous long-term operation, while the site layout reduces the risk of casual human interference. A moderate limitation is the demanding physical access for inspection or maintenance in case of technical failure. During the monitoring phase in March-April it was found that two nodes went offline after approximately 3 weeks. At the location of those two sensors - due to the nearby forest - there was enough solar power coverage. Consequently, when checking the site every 3 weeks the flat batteries have been proactively exchanged with full batteries. Since May the solar power coverage could be increased due to higher sunset which now doubles the time period of battery life time in comparison to March-April. One node provided very unreliable GPS-positions due to nearby rock formations. Consequently the position has been changed.

Evaluation

Please summarise how you have evaluated the initiative’s impact (e.g. social media reach, survey, feedback forms, statistics).

The impact of the GeoNetSee project has been continuously evaluated through social media reach (linkedin, instagram, facebook, interreg webpage)

What has been the effect of the activities?

On Linkedin 454 followers have joined the project. At present the GeoNetSensors have been deployed in 9 countries along the Danube. At present it is to early to indicate how well road safety has been improved since the monitoring phase has started in March 2026. The impact is felt on a regional level since different stakeholders can continuously follow the monitoring data via the Danube Collaboration Centre. For the Austrian Pilot Site representatives of the road operator ASFINAG are regularly supplied with data updates regarding the moving terrain. So far it is very effective since the position of the nodes is provided numerous times per day online. It complements with other measuring systems like inclinometre readings.

Please briefly explain why your initiative is a good example of improving road safety.

In future public authorities, road, railway and waterway operators will be able to monitor unstable terrain in their infrastructure vicinity with low costs for installation, maintenance of and data acquisition. Consequently severe damage to the infrastructure and vehicles/persons passing by can be proactively prevented.

How have you shared information about your project and its results?

We have provided several LinkedIn posts and webpage updates and setup a network of stakeholders to share the idea and current information. The initiative is distributed at corresponding conferences and events.
