Commitment text: By signing the European Road Safety Charter we would like help solving the following problem: How to do the best tie-down for heavy weight products on trucks? A correct tie down of heavy goods does not only apply to companies but also to private road users. It is an issue for all participants of road traffic. The LTI-rate (lost time injury rate), damages to goods, persons and property losses could be reduced.

Why is a tie-down system necessary at all? The need is due to following issues:
-        avoidance of the falling down of the cargo,
-        avoidance of dangerous situations for human and environment,
-        and last but not least to ensure the compliancy with legal requirements.

Unfortunately, only the outcome is defined, but not the process itself. Our heavyweight products are completely dangerous goods, thus we are obliged to ensure a correct tie-down due to the national laws, but also due to the ADR regulations (The European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road). Our distribution volume i.e. app. 450.000 deliveries, 14 million km, about. 250 trucks are employed. Therefore, we provide our employees with regular trainings. Our yearly driver trainings are based on the recommendation of the IGV (industrial federation) and our own material. Around 300 drivers will be trained for 3-4 hours to this subject, where also our agent of dangerous goods is involved. We are planning to organize around 10-12 trainings per year.

We currently use the conventional tie-down system with belts. Public authorities have different points of view regarding the interpretation of the correct doing. Therefore, there is a need of clarification. In order to optimise our tie-down system or search for another one, we would like to learn from the experience of others. We already collaborate with members of the IGV in special task forces and want to compare notes to other companies.
