Who is the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD), and what is your role as a Charter Ambassador?

In Latvia, the Road Traffic Safety Directorate is responsible for a wide range of road safety activities. These include vehicle registration, driver qualification examinations and the issuance of driving licences, roadworthiness testing, road safety audits, and general supervision. We also maintain the national register of vehicles and drivers and contribute to informing and educating road users.

Why did you decide to join the European Road Safety Charter?

We joined the Charter following an invitation from the European Road Safety Charter and were encouraged by the strong network of Ambassadors in other countries.

What are your main focus areas and current projects?

We are involved in a wide range of road safety projects and initiatives. Among these, we are particularly proud of a recently launched project on the investigation of serious road accidents, which supports a better understanding of accident causes and prevention measures.

Who do you collaborate with?

The Road Traffic Safety Directorate was established by the Ministry of Transport and works in close cooperation with Latvian governmental, private, and non-governmental organisations. At European level, we collaborate with DG MOVE, ETSC, CIECA, CITA, and road safety research organisations.

What advice would you give to organisations working on road safety?

Follow best benchmarks, trust traffic safety science, and above all care about people and the environment.
