What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?

Suckling Transport has continuously improved its safety performance over the last 5 years. Where new business is obtained, there follows a sharp learning curve, then a slower phase, before the performance levels out and we see very little, if any improvement. This has been apparent on our contracts with ConocoPhillips, Shell and other oil companies. It is also replicated across all types of safety incident, such as crossover, and spillages, and not just road accidents. It is also apparent in both the frequency and severity of road accidents.
We therefore concluded that the methods necessary to achieve zero incidents will need to be different from the methods used to get close to zero. We are committing to the European Road Safety Charter with the Zero Incident Project:
We need to develop a completely different approach to potential incidents. Our response needs to be consistent, planned and focused.
Zero Incident ProjectDuration: 2008-2010Public: professional drivers (up to 200)
Our customers being oil companies have an expertise in Road Safety. Therefore we will begin the Zero Incident Project with two external audits by our leading customers. These audits will identify weaknesses in our safety management system. These will be corrected.

We will review the technology available to improve our safety performance by:We will conduct trials and, where appropriate, adopt such technology.
We shall look at best practice in journey management procedures and adopt these to minimise the risk to drivers and the public.
We will improve our procedures for the reporting of potential incidents, delivery site risks and near misses, and encourage our employees to report such risks.
We shall adopt procedures to manage those risks robustly and efficiently.
We shall create a process where our employees (drivers) can be given information, in real time, about risks connected to the journey they are about to make, including black spots and risks on the delivery site.

The aim of this project shall be to eliminate all road accidents.
