What are you doing/aiming to do for road safety?
The motor insurance members of the Irish Insurance Federation (IIF) have concluded that our strategy should be to encourage Government to develop, implement and be accountable for a national road safety strategy and in conjunction to develop a cross-departmental, integrated and international best practice approach to road safety.
Commitment activities
Using our industry expertise the IIF will provide views to the Road Safety Authority (RSA), a range of media and other stakeholders on road safety issues. We will continue to support the road safety strategy developed by the RSA in accordance with international best practice.
We will keep ourselves informed of developments and continue to have discourse as and when appropriate with relevant road safety stakeholders. Our activity will increase when Government policies on Road Safety are in danger of not being implemented. We will focus on key road safety issues such as:
- Development of a cross-departmental, integrated and international best practice approach to road safety;
- Appropriate levels of enforcement of Road Traffic Law. (Especially with regard to speeding, drink-driving and seat-belt wearing);
- Establishment of a dedicated Traffic Corps under the Garda Siochana (Police);
- A Traffic Court dedicated to Road Traffic Law offences to establish some efficiency in processing offences;
- Random Breath Testing of motorists;
- The privatisation of speed cameras;
- A copy of the Rules of the Road in every household in the State;
- Access to Penalty Point information on motorists at time of underwriting. ;
- Uninsured driving and supplying the Gardai with accurate information on uninsured driving;
- Radio/Print/TV advertisements aimed at education and prevention.
Commitment targets
We will continue to support the implementation of the Government's current Road Safety Strategy.
We will highlight to Government directly, to other stakeholders and/or through the media failures in the strategy's implementation, targets and/or deadlines missed.
We may collectively deem if appropriate to sponsor a road safety campaign in the future.
We will continue to highlight to all stakeholders areas where Ireland is remiss or falling short of best practice with regard to road safety.
Where possible we attempt to benchmark our (Ireland's) road safety record against the rest of Europe.
We look beyond Europe and research best practice in other jurisdictions such as Australia.
